Wichita Police Department K9 Shot and Killed
WICHITA, Ks. – The Wichita Police Department is sad to announce the loss of K9 Rooster, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday. Officers returned fire killing the suspect.
The organization provided the following announcement via social media:
At approximately 8 PM on 03-18-2017, Wichita Police Officers were dispatched to a disturbance with a weapon at a residence inside the Lamplighter Mobile Home Park located in the 2300 block of E. MacArthur. Shortly after officers arrived on scene the suspect of the disturbance came outside. Officers on scene observed a gun on the suspect. A Wichita Police K-9 Handler released K-9 Rooster to apprehend the suspect. The suspect begins shooting and Rooster is killed. Officers returned fire and struck the suspect. The male suspect was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased from this (sic) injuries.
K-9 Rooster has served with the Wichita Police Department for five years. He will be greatly missed by all.
PSD Rooster is the second canine to die in the line of duty in 2017. Just 10 days ago the Forest Lake (Minnesota) Police Department lost PSD Ranger. LET reported his line of duty death from a medical emergency after being deployed during a high risk car stop.
