94% of mass shootings occur in gun free zones. Virginia lawmakers just completely overlooked that fact while passing their newest legislation.
Virginia’s House Democratic Whip Alfredo Lopez describes himself on his Twitter profile with, “I’m fighting every day to build a Virginia where we lift everyone up and leave no one behind.”
By this, of course, he means “lifting up” everyone except those who believe in their Second Amendment rights, and leaving “no one behind,” unless someone wants to exercise said rights.
Lopez tweeted last Friday, “What a morning in the Public Safety Committee!”
This came after a vote by the committee on several anti-gun bills. The bills, which were divided across party lines (Democrats voting for, and republicans voting against, obviously), passed during Friday’s session and will be headed to the full House for a vote next week. If passed there, they will head to the Senate and then to the Governor’s signature.

The seven bills that have passed in the committee so far are: Universal background checks; Red Flag Protective Orders; one handgun purchase per month; reporting lost or stolen guns; local authority to ban guns in government buildings; children’s access protections; protective orders and firearms.
These pieces of legislation reflect seven out of eight gun control laws that Governor Northam has deemed his “priorities” for this legislative session. The one bill that hasn’t been passed yet is the ban of “assault weapons,” which many Democrats don’t believe have a high probability of passing this year.
These bills are headed down the road to become laws, despite thousands of law-abiding citizens showing up to rally their elected representatives and ask them to not strip away their constitutional rights. And despite an overwhelming majority of local municipalities declaring themselves second amendment sanctuaries.
Moms Demand Action was very happy with the first step of stricter gun control in Virginia. The group is funded by Everytown for Gun Safety, which is funded by presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg.
Moms Demand Action advocates for gun control laws, believing it will result in fewer acts of gun violence. Many of the members have lost children to shootings.

House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn said, “Our action today is for the families who have lost loved ones as a result of gun violence.”
Well that’s a lovely tribute.
But what about the families who have lost loved ones as a result of gun violence that could have been prevented had they been allowed to carry their own firearms at the time?
The shooting in Virginia Beach, for example, which is the incident that sparked the insistence of gun control among many government officials. The law-abiding citizens, believe it or not, abided by the law of not carrying their guns for self defense into the building. And, equally as unsurprising, the bad guy did not.
All of the employees were trapped inside the building, defenseless, with an active shooter running rampant. Within hours, of course, the left was screaming on social media and to the press about the need for stricter gun control.
Never mind the fact that it took police a ridiculous amount of time to get into the specific part of the building where the shooter was located, due to them not having the same key-card access that the gunman did.
We will never know how many people would have survived that incident had the “good guy” citizens been allowed to exercise their rights in that building. But we do know that freaking out and taking away citizens’ ability to protect themselves even more is not going to work.
It’s going to get more good guys killed.

Breitbart reported in June of last year a few of the other “most heinous of high-profile” mass shootings that have occurred in “gun free” zones: Lone Star Bar & Grill (November 7, 2018), the Parkland high school (February 14, 2018), Orlando Pulse nightclub (June 12, 2016), San Bernardino (December 2, 2015), Umpqua Community College (October 1, 2015), Lafayette movie theater (July 23, 2015), Sandy Hook Elementary School (December 14, 2012), Fort Hood (April 2, 2014), D.C. Navy Yard (September 16, 2013), Aurora movie theater (July 20, 2012), the Fort Hood (November 5, 2009), and Virginia Tech (April 16, 2007).
That article, originally reported by the Crime Prevention Research Center, revealed that 94 percent of public mass shootings since 1950 have taken place inside of gun free zones.
That’s a lot of lives that had the potential to be saved, if only the victims were allowed to exercise their second amendment rights.
Following the committee session Friday after the gun control bills were passed, Delegate Mark Levine bragged on Twitter, saying, “A big day for common-sense gun laws in Virginia!”

It was indeed a big day for anti-gun laws. And a big day for the criminals waiting to capitalize on them.
This past weekend, staff contributor James Lewis dug deeper into what’s been going on in Virginia.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, affectionately known as “AOC” in the media and on social media, claimed racism was the reason that there weren’t more uniformed officers with guns at the recent Second Amendment protest at the Virginia state capitol in Richmond this past week.
She totally ignores the fact that more than 22,000 people assembled and protested and there was no violence. No shootings. No assaults. No concussions administered by ANTIFA, a la Andy Ngo.
The only arrest that occurred was because one woman refused to remove a face mask (prohibited at the event).
As usual, AOC, her fellow “squad” members, and liberals in general ignore facts and logic in favor of emotional immaturity and jumping to incorrect conclusions.
She referenced a larger police presence at other demonstrations involving leftist groups, and there’s a huge reason for that – there’s more violence, assaults, property damage, and looting at those events – that is why there are more police.
Victor Morton of The Washington Times reported and confirmed that there were no arrests caused by violence or assaults or confrontations with heavily armed police at Monday’s gun-rights rally in Richmond. This caused Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to wonder aloud why that was … and blame racism.
In a tweet, AOC contrasted the gun rights march in Richmond with protests against Eric Garner’s killing:
“Why were there almost no police officers” despite protesters “flying confederate flags and [carrying] semiautamtic [sic] weapons”?
That’s an easy one – there was no violence in Richmond because those people aren’t the ones who cause trouble, assault people, and damage property. The math is amazingly simple.
She further stated or question:
“When we go out and march for the dignity and the recognition of the lives of people like Freddie Gray and Eric Garner the whole place is surrounded by police in riot gear without a gun in sight,” she claimed.
“And here are all of these people flying Confederate flags with semiautomatic weapons and there’s almost no police officers at that protest,” she continued.
There was at least one Confederate flag photographed at Monday’s rally of about 20,000 people in Richmond. She then concluded that “who or what are our institutions protecting from who? And that image conveys it all, conveys it all.”
Again, check the statistics. No crime at the Richmond protest. Continual personal and property crime during other protests. Please bear in mind that the City of Richmond Police, State Capitol Police, and Virginia State Police were certainly on hand and appeared prepared to handle any type of confrontation or riot.
It just wasn’t necessary.
AOC discussed people marching for the “dignity and recognition of lives,” and her example(s) are exceptionally flawed when comparing the crime stats of protests like she referenced against what we all saw, or didn’t see, in Richmond.
In the matter of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, spontaneous protests started after his funeral service and several included violent elements.
Civil unrest continued with at least 20 police officers injured, at least 250 people arrested, nearly 350 businesses damaged, 150 vehicle fires, 60 structure fires, 27 drugstores looted, thousands of police and Maryland National Guard troops deployed, and with a state of emergency declared in the city limits of Baltimore.
In the matter of Eric Garner, dozens of people have been arrested right after the incident, and on the anniversary of the incident as people have gathered violently to harass the NYC mayor and police commissioner.
Last year in Portland, ANTIFA held protests that lasted over several days, and famously attacked and stalked a father and daughter as they visited Portland, and of course, Andy Ngo was hospitalized after a violent physical attack that made national news.
There is a large police presence at leftist rallies and protests simply because these groups have an established pattern of violence, looting, assault, arson, and other crimes. They’ve established their modus operandi very well, and like clockwork, people get hurt and businesses face millions of dollars in damage after these “assemblies.”
In Richmond, no one got hurt. There were no assaults. No weapons discharged, even though there were thousands of weapons present. People from all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, political affiliations, and nationalities were present. And no one got hurt. Not even a report of one fight.
Second Amendment supporters, patriots, conservatives, and upstanding citizens have once again proven that THEY aren’t the problem. And neither are their legally owned guns.
On Saturday, we reported on how it wasn’t surprising to see that the residents within Virginia purchased nearly 74,000 firearms in December of 2019.
Gun control bills and measures have been a hot topic in the state of Virginia, and with good reason.
Democrats within Richmond have been adamant in bringing forth legislation that can be contorted to strip citizens of their second amendment rights. As a result, citizens of the state thought it a good idea to purchase their weapons while they still could.
According to the Associated Press, December of 2019 saw an increase of 47% over the number of firearm sales when compared to December of 2018.
The tallied number of guns sold totaled out to 73,849. The outlet reported that the increase in sales was likely “due to growing fears of increased firearms restrictions backed by Democrats who control the state government.”
In the past 30 years, there was only one month that toppled the sales from this past December, and that would be December of 2012. That holiday season saw an estimated 75,120 firearm sales, which might have had something to do with then-Governor McDonnell removing the restriction of only being allowed to buy one gun a month.
Several gun store owners made mention of the notable increases in both foot traffic and purchases within their shops. Some customers mentioned that they were first-time buyers, while others were looking to acquire firearm accessories they thought might be subject to banning later on.
One of the first-time gun purchasers was a 66-year-old grandmother of eight. Ida Wright expressed concerns that the impending legislation championed by Democrats within Virginia geared her toward purchasing a weapon:
“I didn’t think I would ever be buying a gun, but things are changing so drastically. If we don’t protect ourselves, who else is going to protect us?”
One of the managers from Bob Moates Sports Shop, Richard Hill, noted the increase in customers filing into the store in December:
“On the basis of what we would have been doing a year ago at this time, you’re looking at a 500 to 1000% increase depending on the day.”
Hill mentioned that with all the bills being pushed forward that aim to restrict lawful gun owner’s rights, it’s creating an increased demand overall. He was also critical of the fact that political pundits in Richmond haven’t addressed the fact that there are criminals already in violation of existing gun laws:
“I have yet to see a single law that addresses what we are going to do with the criminals we’ve already got that are violating untold numbers of laws.”
Gerald Stauffer Jr., who is the manager of Southern Gun World in Chesterfield County, also stated that in the wake of everything going in the state Senate and House, business is booming.
He pointed out that while the rally was going on in Capitol Square, there was a remarkable number of sales from attendees:
“About noon we saw a very steady amount of people coming in with their stickers on, most of them buying a new firearm. They were motivated.”
This outcome is hardly surprising, as there’s been previous studies that show when lawful gun owners think their rights are going to be infringed upon, gun sales experience an uptick.
Maurizio Porfiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the Tandon School at New York University, found that whenever the media or legislators attack gun rights then there’s a near immediate bump in sales.
The study, which gathered data between January 1999 and December 2017, cross examined whether gun purchases increased following mass shootings or when media attacks and reporting of oncoming gun reform happened.
The study proved there to be zero fundamental link between an actual mass shooting and gun purchases – just gun sales increasing when people try to relieve lawful gun owners of their weapons. A testament that the “fear of loss” inevitably creates demand.
