ANCHORAGE – A vehicle chase near Wasilla ended in the shooting deaths of a man and a police service dog early Sunday.

Alaska State Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for a moving violation near Bogard and Helen, according to KTUU.

Troopers said the Subaru Legacy driven by 36-year-old Justin Smith failed to yield and drove faster than the posted speed limit.

About 45 minutes later, the vehicle stopped after running over spike strips placed in the path by troopers of the Parks Highway.

Police authorities said Smith attempted to flee before K9 Rico was deployed. The suspect turned and shot PSD Rico, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers returned fire, hitting Smith. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Smith had two active arrest warrants out of Anchorage. The warrants included assault and probation violation, according to AST.

After being shot, PSD Rico did not survive his injuries. He had only been in service for six months, according to ODMP. There were no troopers injured during the gun battle. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is taking over the case, AST said.
