NEWARK, N.J. – Two Newark police officers have been suspended after a video of a man jumping on a police car went viral over the weekend.

Police launched an investigation after the video showed an officer staying in his squad car while the Newark 18-year-old jumped on the vehicle, reported ABC7NY.

Authorities say a second officer responded to the scene as backup, but waited before engaging the teen.

Police eventually arrested Altahriq Aulston, 18, on three counts of criminal mischief.

However, the agency was unhappy with the officers failure to act. The department says the officers should have stopped the man, but instead they did nothing.

“All officers are trained to respond in various types of situations, including ones where they encounter unstable individuals. These officers instead took no action at all to quell the situation, and to aid and subdue the suspect, as they are trained to do. This lack of action could have resulted in the suspect injuring himself, as well as other persons or property,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said.

Nevertheless, some think the officers showed restraint and their actions may have actually helped to diffuse the situation.

“The majority of Newark Police Division officers are proud and hardworking,” Ambrose said. “The Newark Police Division and the citizens of Newark deserve better than what was demonstrated by these officers. They had an opportunity, and an obligation, to help the suspect, who was acting irrationally, and they failed to do so. We should not confuse restraint with a lack of response. If they did not help themselves, then how can we expect them to help the citizens that they serve.”

Many bystanders gathered around taking cell phone video of the incident. Some thought the man would be roughed up or shot by police. To the delight of at least one man, that did not happen. He was pleased with the police response.

The names of the suspended police officers have not been released.

The officer who remained in his car during the incident has seven months of experience, while the officer who responded as backup has been on the job for 10 years.

IT’S SEEMS NO MATTER WHAT OUR POLICE MAN DO WHEN IT COME’S TO THEM AN YOUNG BLACK MEN THE BLACK RACE WILL ALWAYS TRY TO BLAME OUR POLICE AN I’M DAM SICK AN TIRED OF THE NOW WAYS TO BE USED UP WITH THIS BULL SHIT POOR YOUNG BLACK MEN STORIES NOW PERIOD. TEACH YOUR YOUNG BLACK MEN TO STOP BREAKING THE LAWS AN GO TO SCHOOL AN MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR THEM SELVES IN STEADY OF WAITING FOR SOME ONE ELSE TO DO IT FOR THEM OR CHOOSE A LIFE OF CRIME PERIOD.

I’m the first to call out an officer for misconduct, but really? If they had confronted the guy and the guy was hurt, there would be protests. They use restraint, no one gets hurt, the guy is arrested, and they get suspention??? Thats crazy. Protect and serve, thats what these officers did, despite the supreme court ruling. Goodjob, guys.

I hope they at least make the brat pay for the damage done to the taxpayers’ property.

I didnt know there was a cop still the car. He should probably be fired for cowardice. I agree with the suspension; that was embarrassing to watch.

Amen amen this sets a very bad president for future incidents. Of course they bad guys don’t want us to do anything. Anytime an officer gets praised for not doing his duty by the bad guy it’s a bad day. Pretty soon we will devolve into security guards. Should have a tased this fool and been enroute to the jail. Glad I retired before the wusification of law enforcement takes hold. Told my son not to even think about this as a career.

All the leftists and socialists bitch and complain about anythingng our men in blue do. I can’t blame these two officers for sitting this one out. That shows allot of restraint.

What’s going to happen when the shtf ? Will the leftists and socialists be begging for the help of the police ?

All who vote Democrat deserve whatever comes to your neighborhood. Drugs, prostitution, killings and robberies.. enjoy your socialism lite !

Incredible restraint, an arrest, no injuries, no protests. Seems to me this rookie did it right. Had he/she quickly took action and it went bad he/she would be crucified. You know it and I know it. The department R.E.M.F. should be be put out on the street, on patrol, and experience the life of a sector cop again. Remove the suspension from the files and try to blot the stain from these officers records. They deserve better. I admit that at first my response was WTF! The fact is though these officers restraint prevented a costly, dangerous protest, and law suits.

have to get their messaging straight. They either want officers to de-escalate and diffuse the situation or they don’t! Which is it folks. These officers used tremendous restraint and get suspended. if they jump right into action and the guy gets hurt or worse there will be riots and the Chief will be right out there hanging the guys out and suspending them. Policing in North America has been cowed by politicians, activists and upper brass in the police agencies themselves. FIDO rules now (F**k It Drive On) because the cops have become the enemy and can you blame them. This is a prime example of it – suspending the two officers. It’s pretty simple: If you declare war on your cops then you’d better make friends with your criminals. We can see how that’s working out right now can’t we.

Sorry chief, you got this one wrong. These two officers showed great restraint and you know as well as I do there is safety in numbers and when it comes to a nutcase, the more officers available to control and effect a restraint and ECP of the subject, the less likely any injuries will result. Cudos brothers on your actions and end result in this incident. I would be proud working beside you! Stay safe.
