Sara Winfield, talks about the murder of her husband Deputy Sheriff Brandy Winfield. She discusses how he was murdered, the way that she was notified and the tremendous effect the murder has had on her and her sons. Sara
also talks about the enormous progress they have all made in their lives. Plus, she discusses the people and organization that has helped them along the way.

After responding to the call, Deputy Winfield encountered two men walking along the road and made contact with them. No further radio contact was made with dispatchers.

A short time later, Deputy Winfield was found shot in his patrol car which was upside down in a ravine along the roadway. Deputy Winfield was transported to a local hospital where he died. The original vehicle was located a short time later following a massive manhunt. Two suspects were apprehended later in the week and were charged with aggravated murder. One of the suspects was sentenced to 2 years probation for obstruction of justice. The shooter was convicted and sentenced to 40 years to life.

Deputy Winfield had served with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department for 6 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

According to NBC4i.com, Deputy Winfield’s oldest son Landon plans to start training to become a law enforcement officer after graduation.

“A lot of people ask me, ‘Why in the world would you want to be a police officer after your dad got shot and killed being one?’” Landon said.“I just tell them I want to help people. That’s all I want to do.”

Landon was just 3 years old when his father was killed and he said it’s difficult to remember him. “The only thing I have no is stories people tell me, and that’s basically all I can go off of,” he said.
