Sprinkled between the stressful calls of shootings, fights, domestics, intoxicated people, traffic stops, pursuits and accidents, there are moments that provide much-needed comical relief.  In such a high-stress job, we all need some good laughs during the shifts.

Dispatcher: “911, what’s your emergency?”

Panicked Intoxicated Caller: “There is a gorilla on the pay phone here in the trailer park!!! Oh my God, you have to come and save the children!!!”

Dispatcher: “138, respond to 123 Random St on report of a gorilla on a pay phone.”

138: (laughing hysterically over the radio) “10-4, I’ll be responding to attempt to locate the gorilla”

A 911 call was received from a gentleman who was stuck in a precarious position.  A few of his angry girlfriends had handcuffed him to the bed.  He was naked, and had a swarm of ants attacking honey that was poured on a rather uncomfortable area of his body.  Officers and firefighters had to force entry into the residence and use bolt cutters to free the man.

Over the years, I have been cursed out, asked out, had callers show up at the police department to try to find me, and been called names that I had never even heard of.

Dispatcher: “911, what’s your emergency?”

Two giggling boys: “Hey, hot stuff, you sound so sexy!”  (calling from a cell phone that had no service, so no location)

Dispatcher: “Do you have an emergency?”

Still giggling boys: “What do you look like?”

Dispatcher: “Boys, I just sent an officer to your house, so you can ask him all these questions when he gets there.”

Panicked boys: “Oh sh*t, Billy, hang up the phone!! Oh my God!!” Click.

Several times the words “Go away”, instead of “Go ahead”, (I didn’t mean it….honest!!) have come out of my mouth.  I believe the worst was on a very busy night, I was trying to tell an officer over the radio “Give me a sec”, however, it came out “Give me sex”.  Definitely not one of my finer moments!

Dispatcher: “911, what’s your emergency?”

Unknown male caller singing: “Did you ever know that you’re my hero? You are the wind beneath my wings…..”

I’d love to hear some of your stories, too!  We all have some great ones J
