CHICAGO – A suspect was shot while trying to carjack an off-duty Chicago police officer Monday two blocks from the police department headquarters in Bronzeville on the South Side, authorities said.

The Chicago Tribune reports the officer was sitting in his personal vehicle in the 3600 block of South Prairie Avenue around 6:30 p.m. when two people approached him on either side, according to Chicago Police Sgt. Cindy Guerra.

The person on the passenger side tapped the window to distract the officer while the person on the driver’s side announced a robbery, Guerra said.

“An armed confrontation ensued and the off-duty fired his service weapon,” the department said in a statement.

The suspect was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition has stabilized. The other suspect ran off and remained at large Tuesday.

The officer, an 18-year veteran assigned to the 11th District, was not shot but was taken to Rush Medical Center for stress related symptoms. He is listed in good condition.

A gun belonging to the suspect was recovered from the scene, police said.

The report did not list the age of the attacker who was wounded by the off-duty officer. It simply referred to him several times as a “boy.”

The attempted carjacking follows a spike in this type of crime in Chicago, according to the Tribune. Although Monday’s incident occurred two blocks from Chicago police headquarters, it was unclear if the officer was going or coming from work.

“It shows how brazen these offenders are,” Guerra said at the scene. “They’ll target anyone, and tonight it just turned out to be one of our own.”

At the scene, an evidence marker was placed next to the driver’s side of a white car, its door ajar.

Police kept reporters and bystanders about 400 feet away from where police tape roped off the car.

Darlene Amao, a retired nurse who lives in senior housing nearby, wandered over to the commotion from a bus stop on Indiana Avenue.

She said she was relieved to hear the officer wasn’t harmed.
