Suspect shoots and kills K9 Axe, gunman dies as officers return fire

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich.– In a solemn moment for law enforcement officers, a suspect shot and killed K9 Axe. As a result, officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, which occurred Sunday in the 26000 block of Harper Avenue, reported clickondetroit.

According to authorities, the St. Clair Shores Police Department received a call from the Lakeland Manor Banquet Hall just before 6:30 p.m. regarding a man with a gun outside the facility.

There were about 70 people inside the hall at the time, police said. Witnesses said the event being held at the location was a baby shower.

Police arrived on scene and witnessed a man matching the description outside the building. They said the armed man ignored multiple demands from officers and fled from the scene on foot.

Police K9 Axe was used to track the suspect. During the tracking process, the gunman shot the dog with a handgun, police said.

As a result, St. Clair Shores police officers returned fire, striking the gunman. Consequently, he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sadly, K9 Axe was transported to an animal hospital, where he was also pronounced dead.

Hence, the investigation is ongoing.
