CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Police Department’s Gang Impact Unit arrested a suspect Saturday morning who is believed to have shot a Cleveland police officer and one other victim in the city’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood, police say.

The 4th District officers responded about 4:20 a.m. for a call of a man shot on the 2600 block of East 121st Street between Shaker Boulevard and Larchmere Boulevard, police say, reported Cleveland.com.

“As the officers approached the location here, rounds were fired at our officers,” Chief Calvin Williams said.

One round went through the door of the police cruiser. The officer inside was struck in the leg, Williams said. The unnamed officer was removed from the scene and brought by EMS to University Hospitals.

“As the officers approached the location here, rounds were fired at our officers,” Chief Calvin Williams told the press.

“As other officers arrived to contain the scene, we approached the residents and discovered there was another victim of a shooting who was also taken to the hospital by EMS,” Williams said. Police have not released the condition of the other victim.

The injured officer was treated in surgery at the hospital, where he remains in stable condition, police say. As a result, his family members, along with other police officers, are with him at the hospital, Commander Brandon Kutz said.

“I’ve already talked with him this morning,” Kutz said. “He was alert and talking to people prior to going into surgery, so we’re very hopeful. We just ask the community to keep him in your thoughts and prayers and we appreciate that.”

Police will release additional information, including the ages of the suspect and officers involved, at a later time, Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.
