WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican Senator Lindsey Graham shared a few hot takes earlier in August on X (formally known as Twitter), with the professed musings relating to the ongoing legal troubles facing former President Donald Trump.

One take in question saw the Republican senator claiming that if what Trump did regarding his claims on the 2020 election were criminal, then Democratic Representative Adam Schiff should face hundreds of years behind bars, too.

On August 16th, Sen. Graham compared the underlying circumstances of Trump’s legal woes to past comments Rep. Schiff made during the lead-up to and throughout Trump’s presidency, suggesting that if Trump’s narrative surrounding the past election was unlawful, then certainly Rep. Schiff’s rhetoric could be considered criminal too.

“Remember the Russian hoax and the Mueller investigation?" Graham posted. "Donald Trump is being charged with a criminal act for telling people to watch a network show about the election. If that becomes a crime Adam Schiff will be in jail for 1,000 years! How many times did Schiff go on MSNBC and CNN and tell us Donald Trump was a Russian agent? This is very dangerous what they are doing to our country. It's a terrible double standard.”

Sen Graham’s social media comments point to the innumerable times Rep. Schiff alleged Trump was in some way a Russian asset or was tantamount to a Russian puppet, even using his Congressional online platform on House.Gov to perpetuate that Trump had colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.
Ironically, Rep. Schiff would often use his House.Gov platform to embed the very sorts of news interview videos that Sen. Graham was critical of in his August 16th social media post.

Sen. Graham followed up the abovementioned posting on X to further decry the prosecution of the former president, characterizing the legal proceedings as being tantamount to outlawing one’s ability to question the outcome of any election.

“President Trump is being prosecuted in a way to make challenging an election a crime," he posted. "Democrat Stacey Abrams said it best - it's hard to concede an election when you think you were cheated. Well, here's the current standard: If you are a Democrat and you claim you were cheated, nothing happens.  If a Republican does it, they try to put you in jail!”

While the now four indictments against former President Trump are nuanced in their own respects, Sen. Graham’s depiction of his latest federal indictment isn’t terribly farfetched. In Jack Smith’s superseding indictment brought against the former president earlier in August, the court and jury will be tasked with ultimately answering the question of whether Trump’s claims and sought out legal advice surrounding the 2020 election encroached upon criminal territory.
