Second migrant in two days busted near Texas border caught with child porn on phone

BRACKETVILLE, TX – Within a two-day period near the Texas/Mexico border, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers reportedly arrested yet another migrant caught amid a human smuggling attempt who was allegedly in possession of child pornography on his phone.

Texas DPS spokesman Lieutenant Chris Olivarez took to Twitter to share the details on a human smuggling attempt earlier in August that was thwarted following a traffic stop conducted by troops.

While the pretext of the originating stop wasn’t shared by officials, DPS troopers assigned to the region in question have been operating under Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, a “multi-agency effort” to help secure Texas’ southern border.

According to Lieutenant Olivarez, one of the migrant passengers inside of the stopped vehicle, identified as Honduran national Dagoberto Corea Mendez, was allegedly in possession of five pictures depicting child pornography on his phone. Lieutenant Olivarez asserted in the shared statement on Twitter that Corea Mendez admitted to investigators that he used the images in question for personal gratification.

“On 8/2, during a traffic stop in Bracketville, [Texas DPS] Troopers arrested a driver, a Honduran National for human smuggling," LT Olivarez said. "The passenger, Dagoberto Corea Mendez, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, possessed images of child pornography on his phone. Through further investigation, DPS Special Agents found 5 images of child pornography depicting female children. Corea Mendez admitted that he used the images for sexual gratification. He was jailed & faces criminal felony charges for poss. of child pornography.”

As mentioned earlier, this incident from August 2nd serves as the second migrant arrested by Texas DPS who was allegedly in possession of child pornography within a two-day period.

In our previous reporting here at Law Enforcement Today, Texas DPS troopers arrested a Mexican national who was allegedly in possession of child pornography within the Rio Grande Sector, per a statement shared by Texas DPS spokesman Lieutenant Olivarez on August 2nd.

The suspect, identified as Christian Medrano-Alanis, was allegedly leading a group of four illegal immigrants across the Rio Grande when he was taken into custody during a joint operation between Texas DPS and U.S. Border Patrol.

As investigators were interviewing Medrano-Alanis, an illicit video involving children was reportedly found on his phone. Following the discovery of the obscene materials, officials stated that the case was handed over to the Texas Rangers, with Medrano-Alanis being booked under charges of possession or promotion of child pornography.

A number of incidents involving arrests and apprehensions of alleged or convicted sex offenders crossing into the United States has become somewhat of a recurring theme as of late, as on August 3rd, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens shared via Twitter that agents recently arrested four convicted sex offenders in the course of their duties.
