K-9 officers in Sebastian County, Arkansas, are all looking at safer futures. Following a local tragedy in which an officer was lost in the line of duty and K-9 Officer Kina was shot and missing for two days after fleeing the scene, the Fort Smith community, Mars Petcare and Whistle banded together to ensure better protection for their K-9s.

On Friday, September 16, Mars Petcare hosted local community members, K-9 officers and their handlers to present seven Sebastian County K-9s with Whistle GPS Pet Trackers equipped with a full year’s subscription, which were fully funded by Mars Petcare and Whistle, along with donations from the community. The GPS Pet Trackers add a critical level of protection for K-9s by tracking their location and health, allowing them to remain safe at all times.

As the K-9 officers and their handlers walked into the ceremony, they were welcomed by nearly 50 Mars Petcare Associates, Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders and several community members, all there to see the heartwarming donation and pay respects to their local law enforcement. The handlers and K-9 officers came forward individually to accept their pet trackers, giving attendees a reminder of the importance of keeping our four-legged officers safe.

The K-9s equipped with a Whistle GPS Pet Tracker and service subscription with the help of Mars Petcare, Whistle and an anonymous donor include:

  • Greenwood Police Department K-9 Officer Kina
  • Fort Smith Police Department K-9 Officer Vigo
  • Fort Smith Police Department K-9 Officer Chico
  • Fort Smith Police Department K-9 Officer Ringo
  • Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Sgt. Enzo
  • Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Sgt. Asi
  • Arkansas State Police Troop H K-9 Ringo

Over the weekend the Greenwood Police Department, Fort Smith Police Department, Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office and Arkansas State Police Troop H immediately started setting up the trackers so they can begin experimenting and testing the devices.

The Mars Petcare team in Arkansas continues to work with the local police departments to ensure the safety and health of all their K-9 officers. In addition to the GPS Pet Tracker donations, the Arkansas plant provides EUKANUBA® and CESAR® pet food for local K-9 officers to ensure that they receive the proper nutrition needed to fulfil their roles of protecting the community. And because these K-9 officers must remain in top shape, the Mars Petcare plant welcomes the local law enforcement community to bring area K-9s to their on-site dog agility course, which the Fort Smith Police Department utilizes regularly.

Local officers at the event noted how quickly their K-9s were equipped with Whistle GPS Pet Trackers following this tragedy, expressing their gratitude to the community, Mars Petcare and Whistle for making this possible.
