Rock for a ReasonRachel Morgan is a hero cop.  She was shot five times during a gun battle with a felon after a traffic stop in February, 2011.  Her bullet-proof vest deflected two of the bullets.

Three bullets entered her body that Sunday.  Michael Carmody opened fire on her as she approached his car.  Officer Morgan managed to get several rounds off at the perpetrator before she was rendered helpless.  The suspect was hit five or six times by Morgan and her back up officer.  Carmody lived and is facing attempted murder charges.   Officer Morgan plans to return to work with the Paramus Police Department.

Here’s something you never think about when you hear about an officer down.  When you are shot in the line of duty, you are covered under Workers’ Compensation, not medical insurance.  You don’t get rich on Workers’ Comp.  You don’t work overtime or side security details as most healthy officers do to supplement your income.  You just work at getting better, while the expenses add up.

Rachel has been recuperating since February 7, 2011 and still faces more procedures.  Detective Sgt. John DeVoe serves with the River Vale Police Department.  He contacted Law Enforcement Today about a fundraiser he represents called Rock for a Reason.   The beneficiary of this year’s Rock for a Reason is Officer Rachel Morgan.

LET readers often feel helpless when we hear about officers down.  Here is a fundraiser where we can help and have fun at the same time.  If you’re in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut or in neighboring Pennsylvania, please consider taking a short trip to support this important event.  Do it for rock.  Do it for roll.  Do it for Rachel.

Rock for a Reason will take place on Saturday, January 14 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. at Duke Ocean Grill located at 37 Route 303 in Tappan, NY. Doors open at 8:00 p.m.  The event is open to the public. A $15 donation will be collected at the door. Discount accommodations are available at the Holiday Inn Orangeburg, located at 329 Route 303, Orangeburg, NY, with the use of code “OTJ.”

All proceeds will benefit Rachel’s continued recovery and support her mission to empower police officers to persevere through similar critical incidents. Checks written to “P.B.A. Local 186” with “Rock For A Reason / P.O. Morgan” noted in the memo field can be mailed to P.O. Box 911, Westwood, NJ 07675.
