RIKERS ISLAND, N.Y. – A female corrections officer from Rikers Island was saved from being raped and potentially killed when an inmate attacked her on Saturday night, Daily News reported.
Authorities say it was the quick actions of two CO’s inside the facility that helped stop the horrific incident.
Union officials say that inmate Antonio Rich allegedly attacked the officer just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday in an upper housing area at Otis Bantum Correctional Center.
Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen briefed the media about the alleged encounter.
“The inmate ran into the housing area she was stationed in completely naked and tried to pull her pants off,” Husamudeen said. “Fortunately, two other COs were able to intercede and pull the assailant off, saving her from being raped and possibly killed.”
He went on to say that as Rich attacked the female guard, two male officers rushed in and began battling the naked inmate until they were eventually able to subdue him.

All three CO’s were transferred to Mount Sinai for medical attention, union officials noted.
“The safety and security of our correction officers is a top priority,” spokesman Jason Kersten said after the attack. “Thankfully, other officers were present and able to intervene in this incident and prevent any serious injuries. We have zero tolerance for violent behavior towards our officers and civilian staff and we are pursuing re-arrest of the detainee with the Bronx District Attorney.”
Bronx 12 News reported that the incident has only added to the union’s ongoing push to decrease the ratio of officers to inmates to 1 to 15, instead of the 1 to 50 that it currently is.

Husamudeen said that this marks the third city jail guard to be sexually assaulted in the last two months.
“This incident also reaffirms why [DOC] should alert our members as to the backgrounds of the inmates they are supervising so they can take added precautions,” Husamudeen said.
Daily News said that Saturday’s attack comes just after a 29-year-old inmate tried to sexually assault another female correction officer at Rikers’s Anna M. Kross Center.
And, they said, that same week, on June 18, 22-year-old Jose Muñiz — one of the five men accused of the brutal machete murder of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz — allegedly tried to rape another female correction officer at Manhattan Detention Complex.
