Believe it or not… it really is all about you.
Are you continuing to invest in yourself? If yes, keep it up because it’s a nonstop process and the truly successful do this daily. If not, then you need to start. Because no one is going to do it for you. Don’t rely on your bosses, friends or family to invest in you. It all falls on you my friend. Gone are the days when employers had your best intentions in mind. Maybe they never did.
Your success or failure relies on you.
Why am I telling you this? Because during the last handful of years there has been a steady rise of the YouEconomy. Now before you start thinking that I am some narcissist that only cares about myself, hear me out.
Whether you believe it or not, it’s all about you. Without you pushing yourself, learning, taking chances and being somewhat selfish sometimes, how are you going to get to that next level? The answer is: you won’t. I’m not talking about you blowing off your responsibilities with your family, friends or your law enforcement career, but I am talking about constant self-improvement. Remember that you could be one call away from looking for a new job.
The reality is that police officers are leaving the profession in droves, and it doesn’t look like people are flocking to law enforcement like in days past. From politicians who have no idea what first responders do, or those that don’t care about first responders, to crappy internal leadership that won’t stand up for their troops, the writing is on the wall. These are just some of the reasons that you need concentrate on improving and updating your skills. Hence, spending time and resources working on and improving YOU. That should be one of your main focuses.
You need to harness your fear. I talk to cops all the time about starting a business or some sort of side hustle they want to try. When I ask why they aren’t doing it already, I usually get the same story about not having enough time, or not having enough money. Both in my opinion, are BS. When do you think there will ever be enough time? The answer is there won’t be until YOU make time. And the reality is that when you really think about it, in the big scheme of things, we are not on this spinning blue planet for that long.
When it comes to money, you don’t need gobs of it to start your side hustle if that’s what you want to do. And, if you do need some start-up capital you will find a way. You see, when you understand and figure out the WHY, the HOW will come. Focus on what you want. Whether its that promotion or self-improvement. It all starts with you.
Harness your fear. First responders have no fear of running into a dangerous situation, but often have a fear of stepping into the unknown and working on themselves. I still don’t understand the reasoning behind that. While being humble is an admirable trait, you need to start looking out more for yourself.
Think your organization is going to look after your best interests? Maybe some, but I would be the vast majority don’t. There is a bigger picture at stake my friend and remember that everyone in an organization is expendable.
Back to you. Remember that you need to be very stubborn about your goals and dreams. Welcome to the YouEconomy.
