According to The Times of India, 90% of the cases in one city are solved using forensic information derived from cell phones. Call data records, or CDR, obtained from cell phones is one of the most important tools Indian law enforcement deploys these days.

One noted investigation in which CDR was integral to resolution was the infamous “Dr. Kidney “ case.  Dr. Amit Kumar either tricked or forced impoverished Indian men to donate one of their kidneys for his profit in selling the kidneys to those in need of transplant surgery. Kumar’s records were reviewed, his associates identified, and he was tracked after fleeing to Nepal using the technology.

As CDR improves and becomes more accurate, Indian police are relying heavily on this technology to crack cases.
