ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Police in Ann Arbor have debunked another anti-Muslim hate crime after a student’s claim that she was threatened for wearing her Muslim headscarf was discovered to be a hoax.
After the initial report, further investigation by the police revealed a false report was filed by a Muslim University of Michigan student, who told police several weeks ago that a man threatened to light her on fire if she did not remove her hijab as she walked down the street in Ann Arbor according to Breitbart News.
The unidentified student claimed her assailant was a white man, whom she insisted sounded like he was drunk, Fox 2 reported.
School officials issued a “safety alert” to students, and police immediately launched an investigation into her allegations. Yet the follow-up investigation disclosed no evidence of a crime as the woman’s story not only could not be corroborated, but it could be debunked.
According to officials, a review of surveillance video from businesses along William and State Streets, the area the woman said the assault took place, provided no evidence of a man matching the description she provided. Worse yet, there was no evidence found that could put the alleged victim at the location that day.
This week, Ann Arbor Police Lt. Matthew Lige said there was not enough evidence to substantiate the woman’s claim, and the incident is now being deemed a hoax.
They are weighing whether the woman will be charged with filing a false police report. She may also be hit with a felony charge because her report of “ethnic intimidation” is itself a felony.
LET previously reported an incident that occurred Dec 1 in New York. In that case, an 18-year-old Muslim female claimed that three men called her a terrorist and tried to snatch her hijab from her head while other passengers on the train idly stood by.
According to a source, the teen admitted she lied because her Egyptian parents did not approve of her boyfriend, and she was out after curfew. She was criminally charged with the false report.
