AUSTIN, Texas – One person has been arrested in Austin for throwing lit fireworks into a city police car. The cruiser caught fire during a protest at an intersection where immigrants illegally in the country have been arrested in recent days, reported CBS News.
The suspect who threw the fireworks into the patrol unit entered another vehicle that drove away. But he didn’t get very far. Officers who attempted to detain him during an investigative stop followed him. The man fled on foot but was quickly apprehended early Sunday.
He’s held initially on a charge of evading arrest. However, based upon the circumstances it appears additional charges are likely.
Police say a second person was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. This arrest occurred in a separate protest stemming from what Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say is an operation in South and Central Texas to round up people illegally in the country.
