SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Police say two people are dead and a suspect has been shot after they opened fire in a Mississippi Walmart early Tuesday morning.

Independent reported that the shooting took place just after 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco says that the gunman opened fire inside the store, killing two individuals.

“There was an active shooter at Walmart,” a dispatcher at the Southaven Police Department said when reached for comment.

An officer that responded to the scene managed to take out the shooter, but was also injured when they took gunfire.

Sheriff Rasco said that both the suspect and the wounded officer were transported to nearby hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

One shopper said he was heading out of the Walmart store when he heard someone shooting.

“I heard a bunch of gunshots. Pop pop pop pop — more than a dozen shots,” he said. “I just thought ‘Run!’ and ran to my car. This is crazy. The world is crazy nowadays.”

Police have not yet released the names of the two victims and there is no information presently available about what the motive was behind the shooting.

Officials have not yet confirmed if the shooter targeted the individuals or whether it was random.
