ZACHARY, Lou. – A prayer chain is needed yet again this week as the law enforcement community lays another one of its brothers to rest.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department has sadly reported the death of Deputy Steven Whitstine.

Whitstine was killed in a vehicle wreck that occurred on Thursday morning on Port Hudson-Pride Road in Zachary. Whitstine was transported to the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office just before 10 a.m., reports said.

Whitstine was part of the K9 unit for EBRSO. His canine partner, Sixx, was transported to a local vet and was treated for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for EBRSO said that the 42-year-old deputy was killed on his way to work when his unit veered off the road, struck a tree, then a bridge before overturning.

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux released the following written statement:

“It is with a heavy heart I write to inform you that 42-year-old Lt. Steve Whitstine of our K9 division was tragically killed in a vehicle accident this morning on his way to work in Zachary.

I am grateful for his more than 8 years of service with the EBR Sheriff’s Office and more than 9 years of service with the Baker Police Department. He was a dedicated public servant and will be greatly missed.

My heart breaks for his wife, Deputy Elisha Whitstine, their children, his coworkers, and all of those that loved him. Please remember his family in your prayers. We will let you all know as soon as arrangements are made.”

According to the report from WAFB, Whitstine was a deputy in East Baton Rouge for eight years and a police officer in Baker for nine years before that.

Recent Facebook posts indicated that Whitstine and his wife had just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.

Our heart goes out to this hero and his surviving family members and friends.

Dianne Bernhard, the Executive Director for Concerns of Police Survivors sent a message to the coworkers and family members that Whitstine leaves behind.

“C.O.P.S. is saddened to hear of the accident that took the life of Lieutenant Whitstine. This line-of-duty death is unfortunately not the first for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and we will stand with the department for whatever they may need. To the family, you have our support. The Louisiana C.O.P.S. Chapter is run by amazing survivors who have all personally been through a similar tragedy. Lean on them as much as you need. Lean on them for as long as you need. Your blue family surrounds you.”

Rest in Peace, brother.
