Off-Duty Police Officer Dies After Pemberton Car Crash

PEMBERTON TOWNSHIP — A 28-year-old police officer has died from his injuries following a one-vehicle car crash Sunday morning.

Patrolman Shawn Kitson, a six-year veteran of the force who was off-duty at the time of the crash, leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old son.

Police and the New Jersey State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the details of the crash, which authorities say happened at around 6:17 a.m. on Pemberton-Browns Mills Road, 200 feet east of Four Mile Road.

Kitson sustained extensive head trauma and was transported to Lourdes Hospital Emergency Room at Deborah Heart and Lung Center, where “efforts to revive him were unsuccessful” and “pronounced,” according to a statement released by the police department.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

There have been 519 motor vehicle fatalities in the state and 41 in Burlington County in 2011, according to the most recent statistics provided by the New Jersey State Police.
