An off-duty ATF agent was shot and killed during a robbery of cash and prescription painkillers at Charlie’s Family Pharmacy in Seaford, on Long Island, New York.    ATF Agent John Capano confronted the robber.   Someone from the pharmacy ran to the deli next door to summon help.  An off-duty NYPD officer and a retired Nassau County, New York Police lieutenant responded to that request.  In the confusion, Capano was killed.

The retired lieutenant shot the robber dead.  It has not yet been determined how Capano was killed.  The names of the off-duty officer and the lieutenant have not been released.  They are both being treated for trauma.   The case is under investigation.

Capano’s heartbroken 81-year-old father is blaming himself, believing that he should have picked up the medication instead of his son.
