Nine people shot in Washington, D.C. rampage

There’s a manhunt underway for “two males armed with AK style rifles” in Washington, D.C.

This, after nine people were shot – one fatally – in two different incidents late Thursday night, according to police.

The first one took place in the courtyard of an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW in Columbia Heights at about 10:05 p.m.

Cmdr. Stuart Emerman of the 3rd District said one man was killed and five other adults were wounded.  Of the victims, police said five were men and one was a woman.  The injuries of the survivors ranged from non-life-threatening to critical.

According to D.C. police, the search was on for two “males armed with AK style rifle”.  They were last seen in the rear of the complex – that’s according to a tweet the department sent out just after midnight.

Police are now looking for a light-colored Nissan sedan with an “unknown tag” number that’s believed to be involved.

They said they have no idea what led to the shooting – they’re still trying to gather surveillance video from the area.

The second shooting was reported about 25 minutes later.  This one took place. in the 1400 block of Rhode Island NE.

Officer Sean Hickman said three people were shot, including one man who was unconscious and not breathing.

Police said that the two other victims – a man and a woman – were both conscious and breathing.

It’s unclear at this point if the two shootings were connected.

D.C. Council Member Brianne K. Nadeau (D-Ward 1) took to Twitter to once again blame the problem on guns – not criminals.

“It is beyond time to stop the epidemic of gun violence in this country, and I will not stand by while the residents of Columbia Heights are again visited by the horrible specter of violence.”

She used it to advance her agenda of Red Flag laws, despite having any information whatsoever as to whether Red Flag laws would have played a role in it.

Her uneducated comment also failed to address gang violence or the fact that much of it is committed with illegally obtained weapons.

Take for example the court case currently underway in Chicago.

Prosecutors say that two Chicago gang members allegedly executed a 9-year-old boy in an attempt to get back at a rival gang for a prior shooting, according to a report from Fox.

Nine people shot in Washington, D.C. rampage

Corey Morgan and Dwight Doty began their trials on Tuesday in connection with the slaying. The impending charges now have the two members of the Bang Gang/Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones gang trying to pin the blame on each other, sources say.

Tyshawn Lee, just 9-years-old at the time, was still in his school uniform when the Chicago gang members approached him back in 2015, prosecutors say. Corey Morgan and Kevin Edwards reportedly kept a lookout while Doty lured Lee into an alley, using a juice box as a way to get him to come with him, they said.

Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Margaret Hillmann said that Doty then took out a .40 caliber handgun and shot Lee, killing him.

After the horrific execution, prosecutors say that Edwards drove the getaway car. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder earlier this month in exchange for a 25-year prison sentence, Fox noted.

The supposed reason for the murder?

Prosecutors say that the 9-year-old boy’s father, Pierre Stokes, was a member of a rival gang – the Killa Ward faction of the Gangster Disciples. Doty and Morgan were apparently seeking revenge after a shooting in October 2015 left Morgan’s brother dead and his mother severely wounded. The pair blamed Stokes for the action, and sought to retaliate, prosecutors said.

Even though the three men traveled to the site together and the young child was brutally gunned down, Morgan’s attorney, Thomas Breen, is attempting to shift the sole blame onto the man who allegedly pulled the trigger – Dwight Doty.

“That execution of that 9-year-old boy has to come from one singularly evil person,” Breen said to the court without directly naming Doty. “Not from a plan. His killer did so of his own volition and for his own reason. Not at the behest or help of Corey Morgan.”

But Doty’s public defender argued that Morgan had the motive as it was his family members who were reportedly gunned down just a month prior. He also said that the Morgan family had organized the purchase of the firearm that was used to kill 9-year-old Lee.

Investigators say that a few months after the murder of his child, Stokes allegedly shot three people outside a gas station in retaliation. One of the people who was shot was Morgan’s girlfriend. Stokes is now being held without bail, Fox said.

Authorities say that the two rival gangs have been locked in a war since 2011, with as many as 15 reported shootings being traded back and forth between the groups.
