Minneapolis Democratic candidate alleges widespread ballot-buying scheme: ‘Worse than Somalia’

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Cases of corruption have become incredibly widespread in this year’s election cycle but, as one local government candidate has pointed out, we are seeing only the tip of the iceberg.

Saciido Shaie ran to represent Ward 6 on the Minneapolis City Council earlier this year. Prior to that, she has served in multiple political roles, including as fundraising director for the Minneapolis DFL, the Democratic Party affiliate. She has also been appointed to multiple state boards by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

During her race for city office, Shaie released a video expressing frustration over the city’s multiple cash-for-votes schemes.

In a since-deleted, 15-minute video posted July 6, Shaie spoke in Somali to explain why she will no longer campaign door to door. Though the video was posted months ago, it is only now garnering attention, after it was translated to English by The Blaze.

Shaie claimed that the Somali community in Minneapolis does not abide by the “traditional American system of voting.” Shaie said:

“We are doing the opposite. In fact we are doing it like Somalia, and even worse, is how the campaigns are being done.

“You will see people who are saying, ‘if you need my vote, give me money.’ Terrible things.”

The former candidate went on to say that, while she didn’t want to speak about the voter fraud, she felt she must:

“Truly, I didn’t want to talk about this. But I feel it’s become unavoidable to speak out about it.”

Shaie alleges that elderly voters are the most susceptible to the scheme and get taken advantage of during campaigns. She then gave an example that highlighted how normal ballot buying has become:

“The old men or women, when you go to them to ask for their vote, they respond: ‘I can’t vote for you unless you pay.’

“Recently I sent a van from my campaign to give a ride to voters who promised to vote for my campaign, mostly older women, we picked up eight people. When the driver and the eight people arrived at the voting center the voters told the driver ‘na af garta’ which means ‘sort us out.’ So the driver called me and said this is what they are saying. I asked, ‘What does that mean?’

“They responded, ‘It means our vote is worth $200 a person, we are being promised that amount, but because you are a nice young lady and we like you and how hard you are working, we will take $100 a vote instead.’ ”

Shaie then said that she immediately drove the would-be voters home as she refuses to participate in the illegal scheme.

Later in the video, Shaie assured Somali voters that the fraud will be revealed. She explained:

“Truthfully I want to tell Somalis that these issues will come to light, and it’s not good. This is a country of laws and systems. And this is what has destroyed our Somali community.”

The former candidate preemptively ended the backlash she could receive for being a “snitch” by arguing that authorities already know about the ballot-buying scheme. Shaie claims that people are “already watching” and working to end the corruption. She stated:

“Today, the advice I’m giving you, a lot of people will say, ‘Why? Has she gone crazy? Why would she snitch, why is she telling?’

“I am responding that they already know. People are watching. What I’m saying is to heal and fix this community, the problem happening in our community.”

Shaie concluded the video by urging voters to recognize her work and dedication to bettering their community and vote based on beliefs not cash:

“My campaign is on, and I’m urging people to vote for me because of all the work I’ve done. I need people to come and support my campaign, because I will work for you and do my best to represent you. Assalam aleikum (I salute you.)”

Minn. Rep. claims he exposed cash-for-votes allegations against Ilhan Omar campaign because ‘FBI stonewalled’ him

Sept. 30, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Project Veritas released a video in September that implicated Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar in a ballot-harvesting scheme. Since its release, Omar has openly mocked the allegations.

A Minnesota State Representative, Steve Drazkowski, alerted Project Veritas to the allegations after reporting them to the FBI and being brushed off.

Drazkowski, in an interview with conservative author and commentator Michelle Malkin, said:

“I was not convinced that they (the FBI) were going to do an investigation. The only other organization that I could think of that would bring it to the surface was Project Veritas.”

Project Veritas is a conservative media outlet that utilizes investigative journalism to uncover fraud and corruption. Typically, the group’s journalists will wear hidden cameras and go undercover to obtain video evidence of the corruption.

In this case, obtaining video evidence was easy for them, as it had already been recorded and posted. The brother of Minneapolis City Council member Jamal Osman, Liban Mohamed, filmed and posted multiple videos of himself collecting absentee ballots.

Mohamed can be seen bragging on social media about the ballot harvesting saying:

“Numbers don’t lie. Numbers don’t lie. You can see my car is full. All these here are absentees’ ballots. Can’t you see? Look at all these, my car is full. All these are for Jamal Osman . . . We got 300 today for Jamal Osman only.”

In the video, Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe then introduces Omar Jamal, an employee of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and the chair of the Somali Watchdog Group.

Jamal has been involved in the community for 20 years, and wanted to come forward to stop the voter fraud he has seen occur.

Jamal told O’Keefe:

“It’s an open secret. She (Ilhan Omar) will do anything that she can do to get elected and she has hundreds of people on the streets doing that.”

Jamal aided in the investigation for Project Veritas by interviewing a Somali-American who took part in the scheme. The voter detailed that when he was paid to vote, Omar’s operatives came his apartment to watch him fill out the voting paperwork.

He said:

“They come to us. They came to our homes. They said: ‘This year, you will vote for Ilhan.’ They said: ‘We will make the absentee ballots. We will fill out the forms for you and when you get them back, we will again fill it out and send it.’ “

The voter said he was paid immediately after signing the ballot.

Following the shocking accusations, the Minneapolis Police Department opened an investigation into the ballot harvesting. The department assured the public that it is reviewing the allegations and said:

“The Minneapolis Police Department is aware of the allegations of vote harvesting. We are in the process of looking into the validity of those statements. No further information is available at this time on this.”

President Trump took to social media to tweet about the scandal. He wrote:

“This is totally illegal. Hope that the U.S. Attorney in Minnesota has this, and other of her many misdeeds, under serious review??? If not, why not??? We will win Minnesota because of her, and law enforcement. Saved Minneapolis & Iron O Range!”

Omar then responded to the tweet with what was meant to be an attack on Trump’s tax history. The $750 refers to what the president is alleged to have paid in taxes in years past.

The results of the FBI and Minneapolis Police Department investigations are yet unknown. Looking forward to November, it is clear that these tactics will heavily influence the election.
