Mexican president claims he and Kamala Harris discussed “complete opening” of US-Mexico border

MEXICO CITY, MX-The cat’s out of the bag and it doesn’t look good for team Biden.

According to the Daily Wire, on Monday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that in conversations with Kamala Harris, they discussed “the complete opening” of the US-Mexico border, a span that covers some 2,000 miles.

The border has been “closed” to “non-essential” travel since March 2020 due to COVID. We suppose that depends on what your definition of “closed” and “non-essential” is.

As has been clear since January 20 of this year, the southern border is anything but “closed.” Hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens have flooded across the border virtually unabated, emboldened by Joe Biden’s campaign rhetoric signaling immigration enforcement would be a thing of the past under his administration.

In a tweet, the Mexican leader said:

We spoke again with Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States. On good terms, we dealt with the migration issue, the complete opening of the northern border to reactivate our economies and continue with mutual cooperation to face the pandemic of #COVID19

According to Reuters, Harris and Obrador “discussed ongoing bilateral cooperation to address ‘irregular migration’ to the shared U.S.-Mexico border [oh is that what you call it?]. The two parties agreed to continue focusing on boosting Central American economies through investment in agriculture and ‘climate resilience,” the outlet said.

“The U.S. vice president also told Lopez Obrador that Washington was committed to sending additional doses of COVID—19 vaccines to Mexico, on top of the 4 million doses already delivered,” the White House said.

The Post-Millennial reported that in a morning news conference, Obrador said, “This is what I’m going to suggest today, that we can demonstrate that we’re not putting the population at risk.”

Since the border was “closed” in March 2020, the only travel that’s been “allowed” was for essential travel, including truck drivers, students, workers and individual exceptions at the border.

When the border was really closed in 2020, then Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf wrote:

“U.S. and Mexican officials have mutually determined that non-essential travel between the United States and Mexico poses additional risk of transmission and spread of COVID-19 and places the populace of both nations at increased risk of contracting COVID-19.

Moreover, given the sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus, maintaining the current level of travel between the two nations places the personnel staffing at land ports of entry between the United States and Mexico, as well as the individuals traveling through these ports of entry, at increased risk of exposure to COVID-19.

“Accordingly and consistent with the authority granted in 19 U.S.C. 1318(b)(1)(C) and (b)(2), I have determined that land ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexican border will suspend normal operations and process for entry only those travelers engaged in ‘essential travel,’ as defined below, for entry into the United States.

Given the definition of ‘essential travel’ below, this temporary alteration in land ports of entry operations should not interrupt legitimate trade between the two nations or disrupt critical supply chains that ensure food, fuel, medicine, and other critical materials reach individuals on both sides of the border.”

DHS defined essential travel to include:

“U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents returning to the United States; individuals traveling for medical purposes (e.g., to receive medical treatment in the United States);

individuals traveling to attend educational institutions; individuals traveling to work in the United States (e.g., individuals working in the farming or agriculture industry who must travel between the United States and Mexico in furtherance of such work);

individuals traveling for emergency response and public health purposes (e.g., government officials or emergency responders entering the United States to support Federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government efforts to respond to COVID-19 or other emergencies);

individuals engaged in lawful cross-border trade (e.g., truck drivers supporting the movement of cargo between the United States and Mexico);

individuals engaged in official government travel or diplomatic travel; members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and the spouses and children of members of the U.S. Armed Forces, returning to the United States;

and individuals engaged in military-related travel or operations.”

The discussions between Harris and Obrador comes at a strange time, as the U.S. is currently in the midst of discussing the imposition of draconian restrictions and mandates in light of the so-called “Delta variant,” a much more contagious but far-less deadly version of the coronavirus.

In addition, a number of European leaders are complaining about the United States keeping its border closed to parts of Europe, a restriction lifted by former President Trump prior to leaving office and reimposed by Biden. The irony of that is rich because when Trump initially closed the border to flights from China and Europe in the infancy of the coronavirus, Biden and other Democrats accused him of xenophobia.

Back in June, we reported on the “vice president” and “border czar” Kamala Harris and her failure to go anywhere near the border to witness firsthand the chaos the Biden administration had fostered. For more on that, we invite you to:

The following contains editorial content written by a retired Chief of Police and current staff writer for Law Enforcement Today.

GUATEMALA- In a rare act of journalism—well kind of—NBC’s Lester Holt pressed Kamala Harris on her claim that the Biden administration has indeed visited the border in order to determine how best to solve the border crisis which has been going on for nearly five months.

In an interview that aired on NBC’s “Today” program on Tuesday, Harris claimed she is working to “identify the problem” occurring at the U.S-Mexico border to solve it.

Harris, who was put in charge of the border crisis by Joe Biden over two months ago was asked by Holt about her plans to visit the southern border.

With a straight face (well as straight as the cackling, obnoxious Harris can get), she said that the administration had indeed been to the border, while Holt pushed back that she has not.

“[T]he question that has come up, and you heard it here, and you’ll hear it again, I’m sure, is, ‘Why not visit the border? Why not see what Americans are seeing in this crisis?’” Holt asked her.

“Well, we are going to the border. We have to deal with what’s happening at the border. There’s no question about that. That’s not a debatable point. But we have to understand that there’s a reason people are arriving at our border and ask what is that reason, and then identify that problem so we can fix it,” Harris replied.

A short time later, Holt got around to pressing Harris on whether she planned on going to the border.

“Do you have plans to visit the border?” he asked Harris.

“At some point, you know, we’re going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So, this whole…thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,” Harris, clearly flustered answered. So, what is it? You’re “going to the border” or you’ve “been to the border?”

Holt pushed back, “You haven’t been to the border.”

Engage cackling, uncomfortable laugh.

“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris cackled in her cackly best. “And I mean, I don’t understand the point you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”

Dear Kamala…we don’t have a border crisis with Europe! The point Holt was making (which he refused to continue to press Harris on) was the fact that SHE was put in charge of the administration’s response to the crisis at the border and SHE has not been within 1,000 miles of the border since.

“I care about what’s happening at the border,” she added. “I’m in Guatemala because my focus is dealing with the root causes of migration. There may be some who think that that is not important, but it is my firm belief that if we care what’s happening at the border, we better care about the root causes and address them. And so, that’s what I’m doing.”

To Harris’ credit, she did go to the southern U.S. border…at 37,000 feet in Air Force Two as she flew OVER it.

Jesse Watters of Fox News had a great analogy for Harris’ ridiculous flippant statement about “root causes.”

He related what would happen if his wife came home and found there were bees in the house because he had left the door open.

“She says ‘Jesse, there’s bees in the house, do something.’ And I say, ‘I’ll take care of this. I am going to deal with root causes,’” he continued, saying he would leave the house, leaving the door open to go over to a neighbor’s house and talk to him about his beehive.

“That’s what Kamala Harris is doing. She’s wasting time at the neighbor’s house talking about a beehive. All we wanted her to do was to go to the door and close the door,” Watters continued.

Meanwhile, Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Harris of “bribing” Central Americans to stay in their home countries, the Daily Mail reported.

“Harris flew to Guatemala to unveil her policy to address the crisis. What is it? In a word, the plan is bribery. The administration plans to spend billions of dollars to pay Latin America’s poor not to move to the United States. CNN loves the idea of course. It blames America.”

Carlson then went on to slam Harris’ blaming of everything but the real reason for the border surge—the Biden administration’s open borders rhetoric.

“Kamala Harris is no genius, but…she knows more bribes won’t work. So instead of defending her plan on the specifics, she’s taking the easier and far more familiar road…more babbling about racism, and sexism, and of course, climate change.”

He then played a clip of the feckless vice president blaming “violence against women, indigenous people, LGBTQ people, and Afro-descendants” for the influx of illegal migration to the southern border. Which is of course absurd.

She probably can’t laugh her way out of this one.

Back in March, Law Enforcement Today first reported when Biden assigned Harris to oversee the border crisis. She hasn’t done squat since. For more on that original report, we invite you to:

WASHINGTON, DC — President Joe Biden has now delegated his leadership role in the growing illegal immigration crisis at the Texas border to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is increasingly being tasked with more presidential-like duties.

This past week, Biden appointed Harris to lead his administration’s efforts to address a record surge in migrants, including unaccompanied minors, which have strained capacity at immigration facilities at the southern border in recent weeks.

Biden said in his White House announcement:

“I can think of nobody who is better qualified to do this.”

Referring to Harris, Biden said:

“When she speaks, she speaks for me. Doesn’t have to check with me. She knows what she’s doing and I hope we can move this along.”

Harris will serve as the administration’s diplomatic liaison in talks with Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador and try to address the root causes of the migrant surge.

Harris said to Biden:

“Thank you, Mr. President, and for having the confidence in me. There’s no question this is a challenging situation.”

However, Harris is being criticized by some as a poor choice to lead the border crisis response.

She has been accused of flip-flopping on the issue of decriminalizing illegal crossings and comparing ICE to the KKK, according to FOX News reports.

On “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning, former Acting ICE Director, Tom Homan, slammed Vice President Kamala Harris as the “worst pick” to lead the response to the current border crisis under the Biden administration.

Homan said:

“When President Biden says [Kamala Harris] is the most qualified, I mean, seriously? What color’s the sky in his world? Because you couldn’t get a worse pick. Look, she supports sanctuary cities, she wrote legislation to reward those who illegally entered into the United States.”

Homan further added:

“She vilified the men and women of the Border Patrol during the last surge, saying they are mistreating immigrants. She’s an open borders advocate. She wants to abolish ICE and she compared immigration officers to the KKK during the Senate hearing, and you want to put her in charge of immigration enforcement on the border?

“I couldn’t think of a worse choice.”

Harris was among the Democrats who raised their hands during a June 2019 presidential primary debate when asked if they were in favor of decriminalization of illegal border crossings. When Megan McCain asked her about it on “The View,” Harris denied it, although she still said the law should not be criminally enforced:

“I would not make it a crime punishable by jail. It should be a civil enforcement issue, but not a criminal enforcement issue.”

In 2018, Harris came under fire for grilling Ronald Vitiello, President Trump’s nominee to lead Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

During a hearing on Capitol Hill,  Harris specifically compared ICE to the Ku Klux Klan and tried to get Vitiello to agree with her by asking the following:

“Are you aware of the perception of many about how the power and the discretion at ICE is being used to enforce the laws and do you see any parallels?”

Harris continued asking Vitiello:

“Are you aware that there is a perception that ICE is administering its power in a way that is causing fear and intimidation, particularly among immigrants and specifically among immigrants coming from Mexico and Central America? Are you aware of that perception?”

Then before getting cut off again by Harris, Vitiello replied:

“I do not see a parallel between the power and authority that ICE has to do its job and agents and officers who do it professionally and excellently with lots of compassion.”

At his first solo press conference on March 25, Biden admitted he did not know when the press would be able to access federal immigration facilities at the southern border.

Journalists in recent weeks have been barred from immigration facilities amid the ongoing border crisis, with one longtime Getty photographer claiming he had to photograph U.S. border operations from Mexico rather than from the U.S.

Asked when reporters might be allowed into overcrowded migrant facilities at the southern border, Biden said during the press conference “very shortly,” but did not provide a specific timeline.

Pressed on the issue, Biden said he would “commit to transparency” on the issue and that media would have “full access” to the facilities in the near future.

When asked again about when the press would gain access to immigration facilities, including those where children are reportedly being packed together in large numbers, the president responded: “I don’t know.”

Biden’s frequent inability to give details on important topics contrasts with the image of Harris silently lurking behind him when he speaks or signs proclamations.

Some observers have become unnerved and theorize she is being prepared to take over the presidency if needed in the future.

For example, Kamala has already been tasked with the president’s traditional job of making phone calls to major foreign leaders. She recently spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Biden himself indicated he thought of himself as a “transition candidate.” He further explained after his election that, should he and Kamala ever have a difference of agreement, he would leave office and hand it over to her.

On more than one occasion, Biden has referred to Vice President Harris as President Harris, fueling further speculation as to what her future role may actually be.

The 25th Amendment states:

“In case of the removal of the President from office, or his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.”

Between Biden’s verbal gaffes, falling three times on the steps of Air Force One and his first press conference, more eyes may turn to Harris as she takes on more duties.
