Colonel Gary Settle, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, sadly reports the death of Trooper Lucas Dowell.
Trooper Dowell, 28, was shot and killed while he was assisting the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force with executing a search warrant.
Officers announced their presence and made entry into the residence. Upon entry, the resident and suspect opened fire upon officers, critically wounding Dowell. Other officers returned fire killing the suspect.
Dowell was transported to Southside Community Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
Lucas Dowell served the Virginia State Police for more than four years. He was assigned to the Appomattox Division. His parents and his sister survive him.

In Lucas Dowell’s senior baseball profile in 2009, he said in 10 years, he saw himself as a U.S. Marshal or in the FBI.
