Acting Sheriff Derek Navarette of the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado sadly reports the death of Sergeant Matthew Moreno.
Sgt. Moreno, 37, died as a result of injuries he sustained in a three vehicle crash. Moreno was responding to a domestic assault complaint when his patrol pick-up truck was struck head on by another vehicle. Moreno’s partner was also injured in the collision. Both Moreno and his partner were transported to Mt. San Rafael Hospital. Moreno succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
A deputy in a second patrol vehicle following Moreno in responding to the same call was also involved in the collision. He sustained minor injuries in the crash.
The driver of the on coming vehicle was also killed and died at the scene. Her one-year-old male toddler was transported to Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Unfortunately, he also succumbed to his injuries and died a few hours after the crash.
The Colorado State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and conducting a crash reconstruction.
