In Memoriam Officer Scott Von Lanken


Chief Scott Reid and Dave Genova, the CEO and General Manager of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver, Colorado sadly report the death of RTD Security Officer Scott Von Lanken.

Officer Von Lanken, 56, was shot from behind as he was giving directions to two ladies outside the Union Station Transit hub. The witnesses described, and surveillance video showed the suspect walk up behind the officer, pull out a handgun, and then shoot him in the neck. The attack is believe to be unprovoked and solely due to his wearing a uniform. He was transported to the Denver Health Medical Center where he died a short time later.

Officer Von Lanken was employed as an armed security officer by Allied Universal Security Services and was under contract by RTD. He served in that capacity for six years. He had previously served as a police officer with the LaCrosse Police Department in Wisconsin. For twenty-six years he served as a pastor of several churches in Arizona, Ohio, Texas and most recently, Loveland, Colorado.

Von Lanken recently returned to law enforcement to better provide for his family. He served as a volunteer chaplain for the Loveland Police Department and was seeking employment with that agency as a full time uniformed police officer. His wife, Shellie and their two adult children, one of which, is severely disabled survive Officer Von Lanken.
