Chief William McManus of the San Antonio Police Department in Texas sadly reports the death of Officer Miguel Moreno.
Officer Moreno, 32, was shot and killed as he and his partner, Officer Julio Cavazos were on directed patrol in a high crime neighborhood. Moreno and Cavazos were assigned foot patrol to make contact with the residents in the area.
Moreno parked the patrol car behind a vehicle that appeared to have been broken into. The officers exited their patrol vehicle and immediately came under fire by one of the two suspects standing near the vehicle.
Moreno was struck in the head by a single gunshot. Cavazos was hit in the chin. That bullet lodged in his chest. Despite his wounds, Cavazos pulled Moreno out of the suspect’s line of fire to safety. Cavazos then returned fire fatally wounding the suspect. The second suspect was then taken into custody.
Both Officers Moreno and Cavazos were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment. Cavazos is expected to survive and return to duty. Unfortunately, Moreno succumbed to his gunshot wound the following day.
Miguel Moreno served the San Antonio Police Department for nine years. He is survived by his parents and siblings.
Officer Miguel Moreno is gone, but will never be forgotten. EOW: Friday, June 30, 2017.
