Chief Alfonso Morales of the Milwaukee Police Department sadly reports the death of Officer Matthew Rittner.
Officer Rittner, 35, was shot and killed during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in a high crime area.
Rittner was a member of the agency’s Tactical Response Team and they were making entry into a residence to assist other officers conducting a narcotics investigation. After announcing their presence and purpose the team forcibly entered the residence. The suspect inside responded with gunfire from a rifle. As a result, Rittner was struck in the chest. He was transported to Froedtert Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds a short time later.
The suspect was subsequently taken into custody.

Rittner is the third Milwaukee police officer to be killed in the line of duty in eight months.
Matthew Rittner served the Milwaukee Police Department for 17 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served two tours of duty in Iraq. His wife and their young son survive him.
Officer Matthew Rittner is gone, but will never be forgotten.
