Chief Karl Auerbach of the Salt River Tribal Police Department in Arizona sadly reports the death of Officer Clayton Townsend.
Officer Townsend died as a result of injuries he sustained while conducting a traffic stop. Townsend had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and was approaching the vehicle.
As he was standing next to the driver’s door of the vehicle he had stopped, Townsend was struck by a passing vehicle. The vehicle that Townsend had stopped was also struck in the collision.
He was transported to Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Reports indicate that witnesses to the collision observed the driver of the striking vehicle was distracted and possibly texting as he was driving. That driver later admitted to investigators that he was texting during the collision. The crash investigation is being conducted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
I am sorry to report the death of a Salt River Tribal Police Officer tonight. Details are still being realized, but it appears he was struck and killed by a car, while on a traffic stop on SR101 near McDowell Rosd. @Arizona_DPS Troopers are conducting the investigation.
