Chief Butch Ayers of the Gwinnett County Police Department in Georgia sadly reports the death of Officer Antwan Toney.
Officer Toney, 30, was shot and killed as he and his partner were checking on an occupied suspicious vehicle. The occupants were believed to be smoking marijuana.
As both officers were approaching the vehicle, one or more occupants opened fire on the officers shooting through the windows of the vehicle.
Officer Toney was struck by one bullet. His partner pulled him to safety and returned fire.
The suspects fled, but the vehicle was located about a mile away after it crashed. It is unknown if any of the suspects were struck by officers gunfire.
It is believed that there were as many as four suspects inside the vehicle. When found, the automobile was unoccupied. The suspects remain at large.
Toney was transported to the Gwinnett Medical Center where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
