Sheriff Bill Gilkey of the Yell County Sheriff’s Department in Arkansas sadly reports the death of Lieutenant Kevin Mainhart.
Lt. Mainhart, 46, was responding to a domestic disturbance call when he came upon a vehicle that was associated with the incident. The initial call reported a domestic assault and that two victims were being held hostage.
Mainhart made a traffic stop of the vehicle and lone male occupant. During the detention an altercation erupted. The suspect shot Mainhart and fled.
A passerby found him laying in the roadway near his patrol vehicle and called 911 for assistance. First responders provided medical aid to Mainhart at the scene. He was transported to Dardanelle Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
Other officers proceeded to the residence where the domestic call had originated and located two murder victims.
It has been reported that the suspect had barricaded himself in a nearby home. SWAT officers surrounded the house and negotiators began dialogue with the suspect, who was taken into custody a short time later.
Kevin Mainhart served the Yell County Sheriff’s Department for five years. He had previously served the West Memphis Police Department having served over 20 years and retired at the rank of captain. He also worked for Arkansas Tech and the U.S. Air Force as a security police officer.
The Arkansas State Police are conducting the murder investigation with the assistance of the Yell County Sheriff’s Department.
