Sheriff Kevin Tolson, of the York County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina sadly reports the death of Detective Michael Doty.

Detective Doty, 37, was shot during his response to a domestic violence assault call. Late Monday evening 911 received a call of a domestic assault in progress. Officers arrived on the scene and after speaking with the victim, learned that the suspect had already fled the residence into the woods behind the house. A K9 officer started searching the woods when the suspect shot and wounded the officer.

The Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was called to assist in the search for the suspect as he was armed with a rifle. During the late night and early morning search, the suspect ambushed the SWAT officers who were searching the woods for him. Two sheriff deputies and one officer of the York Police Department were shot and injured. The suspect was later apprehended and found to be suffering from a gunshot wound.

All of the injured officers were transported to the Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte. Doty was the only officer that was in critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his gunshot wound this morning.

The State Police helicopter that assisted in the search also suffered damage when the suspect shot at and hit the aircraft. No officers in the helicopter were injured.

Michael Doty was a 12-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. He started his employment with the department as an investigator on the Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit. Moreover, he was a member of the department’s SWAT team. More recently he was assigned as the agency’s Narcan Coordination officer.

His wife and children survive him. Micahel Doty’s twin brother, Chris, is also a deputy with York County Sheriff’s Department.
