Heath Winfrey, Sheriff of the Craig County Sheriff’s Department in Oklahoma, sadly reports the death of Deputy Sheriff Sean Cookson.
Deputy Cookson, 23, was traveling to a mandatory training seminar with his wife, Cassandra in their Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck. Visibility was low due to heavy fog and their Chevrolet pick up truck struck a Buick Regal sedan that was making a left turn.
The truck glanced off the sedan and was struck head on by a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe was then struck by another vehicle.
All occupants sustained minor injuries with the exception of Deputy Cookson. He sustained major injuries. He was flown via Medivac helicopter to St. John’s Medical Center in Tulsa. After undergoing emergency surgery, he remained in the intensive care unit until he succumbed to his injuries late Monday night.
Deputy Cookson completed the Oklahoma Police Officer Certification Course and began full time work as a road patrol deputy on February 9th.
