Sheriff Brian Martin of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department in California sadly reports the death of Deputy Sheriff Robert Rumfelt.
Deputy Rumfelt, 50, responded to an assault in progress involving multiple combatants.
Officers found it necessary to deploy a Taser to control one of the suspects and take him into custody. Following the incident, Rumfelt left the scene and drove back to his assigned patrol area. He got about a half mile away from the scene of the altercation when he suffered a cardiac medical emergency.
Rumfelt’s patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. He did not sustain injury in the crash. However, he was still suffering from the medical emergency. He was transported to Sutter Lakeside Hospital for medical treatment.
Rumfelt did not survive the cardiac emergency and he passed away.
Robert Rumfelt served the Lake County Sheriff’s Department for three years. He previously served the Lakeport Police Department for nine years. He left that agency to serve as a private contractor overseas, training law enforcement personnel.
His wife, two daughters, parents and a sister survive him.
Deputy Sheriff Robert Rumfelt is gone, but will never be forgotten. EOW: Tuesday, August 22, 2017.
