Sheriff Scott Jones of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department in California sadly reports the death of Deputy Sheriff Robert French.

Deputy “Bob” French, 52, was shot and killed by an auto theft suspect at a local hotel while assisting with an on going investigation. French was on a temporary assignment to the Sacramento County Auto Theft Task Force and was participating in an active investigation when officers came upon a stolen vehicle at a local hotel.

Vehicle Pursuit

Two women were observed getting into the stolen vehicle and leaving the hotel parking lot. Uniformed officers in a marked patrol car attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit ensued. Both women were arrested at the end of the pursuit in a nearby town.

Search Warrant/Shootout

Following their arrest, officers returned to the hotel with a search warrant in an attempt to locate any additional evidence and suspects. Upon announcing their presence at the hotel room door, a male suspect fired a high-powered rifle through the door injuring two CHP officers that were working with the task force.

The suspect then exited the hotel room and onto an adjacent balcony. Still armed with his rifle, he fired at French from his elevated position. The deputy was maintaining a perimeter position outside the hotel.

After shooting French, the suspect jumped from the balcony and got into a car. The suspect fled the scene of the shooting, but crashed a short distance away. Another gun battle followed with the suspect being struck by officer’s gunfire. The suspect was taken into custody and remains hospitalized.

The two CHP officers injured in the shootout are expected to survive. One was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, while the other was taken to UC Medical Center. The condition of each officer remained undisclosed.

Robert French Fatally Wounded

French died in the ambulance as he was being transported to a hospital.

Robert French, or “Bob” as he was known, served the Sacramento County Sheriff Department for 21 years. He was assigned uniformed patrol and also served as a training officer at the North County Patrol Unit. His girlfriend, children, grandchildren and sister survive him.
