Mayor Jim Fuller Jr., of the City of Ludowici, Georgia, sadly reports the death of Chief Frank McClelland Jr.
Chief McClelland was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle that was fleeing a traffic stop in a neighboring county.
Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The driver of that vehicle fled the traffic stop and drove into Long County from neighboring Liberty County at a high rate of speed.
Some reports indicate that sheriff deputies from Liberty County started the vehicle pursuit and troopers of the Georgia State Highway Patrol assisted them when the pursuit left Liberty County.
McClelland heard the radio broadcast reference the pursuit and stopped traffic at an intersection so that innocent parties would not be in danger. As a result, he was directing traffic outside his patrol vehicle at the intersection when the suspect driver struck him.
After striking McClelland, the suspect driver lost control of his vehicle and struck and killed a motorcyclist at a nearby gas station. The vehicle came to a stop and the suspect was taken into custody,
The Georgia State Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation. The suspect driver is facing multiple charges
Frank McClelland Jr. served the Ludowici Police Department for over ten years. His wife and children survive him.
