Superintendent Michelle Hernandez de Frayley of the Puerto Rico Police Department in Puerto Rico sadly reports the death of Agent Benjamin De los Santos-Barbosa.

Agent Santos-Barbosa, 32, died as a result of a gunshot wound he sustained during a traffic stop for a minor traffic violation. Santos-Barbosa and three additional officers attempted to make a traffic stop of a vehicle due to a dark window tint violation. The driver failed to stop as directed and fled the scene.

During the suspect’s flight, he encountered a broken down vehicle that was blocking his escape. The suspect started backing up and rammed one of the pursuing officers patrol vehicle. At this point the suspect exited the vehicle and commenced firing upon the officers.

Santos-Barbosa was struck in the head by a single bullet. The other officers as well as a nearby citizen returned fire, which wounded the suspect.

Santos-Barbosa being mortally wounded, was transported to the hospital. He was kept on life support so that his internal organs could be harvested for donation purposes according to his wishes.

Benjamin De los Santos-Barbosa served the Puerto Rico Police Department for 5 ½ years. His nephew of whom he obtained custody from his sister, Blanca De los Santos, survives him. Blanca also was an agent with the police department. She was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2010.
