VAN NUYS, Calif. – A man held his young son between himself and responding officers during a standoff as LAPD responded to a call of a domestic disturbance.
Authorities said the mother of the child called police shortly before 8 p.m. in the 15000 block of Cohasset Street. The call was possibly due to a domestic dispute, authorities said.
It was unclear if the man was armed, but police said he was known to carry knives, reported ABC 7 News. His identity was not released following his arrest.
The man appeared agitated as he kept his distance from officers while holding his son in his left arm. At one point, the man kicked trashcans toward the officers to create more space.
In video captured from AIR7 HD, the man continued to pace around a side yard in front of the home as officers tried to convince him to put his son down.
As the man went back and grabbed one of the trashcans, he placed his son on top. It was at that moment that officers were able to safely grab the child. After a few more tense minutes, it appeared as if the man was going to surrender. But as officers approached he threw a punch leading to a scuffle. Police were able to take the man down and handcuff him without incurring serious injury.
The unidentified man was later transported to a hospital without explanation. The child’s mother told reporters she’s grateful her son was OK.
