Man holding his daughter leaps in front of NYC train. Commuters spring into action.

THE BRONX, N.Y. – Police in New York City say that a man holding his 5-year-old daughter jumped in front of an oncoming train on Monday in the Bronx, killing himself and injuring the child.

Amazingly… the young girl survived.

The shocking report comes from the New York Post, who said that the incident happened around 8 a.m. at the elevated Kingsbridge Road station in the Kingsbridge Heights section of the Bronx. An oncoming Number 4 train was heading southbound through the station when the unnamed man, reportedly holding his 5-year-old daughter, jumped out onto the tracks.

Witnesses at the scene were horrified to see the events unfold before their eyes.

Jennifer Hub, a mother of four, said she saw that the man “had the child in his arms when he jumped on the tracks as the train was coming.”

Hub said that there was a large group of people on the platform that began screaming in horror as the man took the leap.

“There was at least 20, 30 people screaming” Hub said. “I watched as that train came around that corner and I saw as the man jumped and I see the little feet hanging out.”

Emergency responder teams converged on the scene immediately, halting the trains from moving along that track. Officials say that the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The station was closed down as investigators continued to search for details into the motive behind the act.

The young girl was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries. The Post said that her mother met her at the hospital.

Two courageous bystanders received minor injuries when they jumped down onto the track to try and free the little girl after the train came to a stop, officials said. They’re still trying to determine how she miraculously survived the event.

“My theory is that the little girl was under the train and small enough she could roll because she only has a few abrasions on her forehead and arm,” Hub said.

Bystanders caught cellphone video of the two men jumping down rescuing the girl in the aftermath of the horrific scene.

Viewer discretion is advised.

“Little by little, my love, little by little!” a bystander can be heard saying as the young girl emerged slowly from underneath the train. One of the men on the tracks picks her up and helps her onto the platform, where a group of concerned citizens took her in their arms.

Everyone, including the police are amazed at the child’s survival.

“She got lucky,” one police source said. “It’s amazing that she’s alive.”

The deceased man’s identity was not immediately released.
