This editorial is brought to you by a former police chief and a current staff writer at Law Enforcement Today.
Time was the silent majority always trumped the not-so silent minority.
We are currently seeing that a loud, boisterous, obnoxious minority can put the majority into submission. Is it actually submission? Is it fear? Maybe indifference? Or is it ignorance? It is likely a little bit of everything, but it is beginning to look more and more like it is indifference.
After all, we have seen this before. In the 1960’s, we saw anarchy in the streets after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Much as what is going on today, the actions of one man set the wheels in motion and led to cities burning, stores being looted, and people being killed.
Of course, the differences are stark. Dr. King was a legendary icon who was the leader of the American civil rights movement. He was someone who was looked up to by a large swath of the population, both black and white.
What is the other difference? Well, in the case of George Floyd, he was an ordinary man with a criminal record whose life was taken at the hands of a police officer. One single police officer, with others complicit by not interceding. Yet, since Floyd died, every police officer in the country is being treated like they were the very ones that put their knee on George Floyd’s neck.
Finally, the most important reasons are social media, and Donald Trump. Oh, and a media that is more interested in playing a game of gotcha with the president than reporting what is really going on. Ideology has become more important than telling the truth, or at least reporting the facts and letting people decide what the truth was.
Social media is an important part of the equation because in 1968, the news was reported every night at 6:00 and 11:00, and you received either a morning or afternoon newspaper. It was more important to get the facts right instead of being the “first on scene.
Now with social media and a 24/7 news cycle, we are treated to Facebook Live, where we have an on the scene video and commentary by someone who has an agenda one way or the other. The other issue is that by showing something live as it is happening, it is possible to get a group of like-minded individuals to show up in pretty quick order.
Finally, there is President Trump. The president is obviously a lightning rod. There are not middle of the road opinions where he is concerned…you either love him, or you hate him. There really is no in-between.
What we are currently seeing is, as Lt. General Michael Flynn says, a case of “2 percent of the passionate…control[ling] 898 percent of the indifferent 100 percent of the time”
In an op-ed piece, General Flynn believes that this is exactly what we are seeing, and we agree. There is a small group of driven and motivated individuals who are working tirelessly to destroy our way of life, which honestly most of us take for granted.
Since George Floyd’s death, we have seen, as General Flynn says, “treason and treachery.” The rule of law no longer seems to exist, and police officers, whom we have counted on for over 100 years to protect our way of life are now portrayed as the enemy, with cities across the nation slashing police budgets, even as crime is exploding, including serious crimes such as murders and felony assaults.
Flynn says that it is time for the silent majority, or the indifferent as he calls them, to no longer maintain their silence.
Flynn refers to the opponents in the war for the soul of our nation the “children of light” versus the “children of darkness.” If…and it is a big if we are to get through this run on our constitution and our very way of life, it is important to understand, as General Flynn says that it truly is “us vs. them.”
Flynn recently wrote, he says that “the art and exercise of self-governance require active participation by every American.” How true this is. In our country, all Americans over the age of 18 have the right to actively participate in our government, and that is done through voting. Voting however is only part of active participation, Flynn said.
One thing you have to appreciate about the small minority troublemakers. They are loud, and they are passionate. Much as the “squeaky wheel gets the grease,” so too do the well-organized, passionate groups. Meanwhile, the silent majority, or indifferent as Flynn calls them sit by idly and let things pass them by. Flynn says, and we agree that it is not time for the silent majority, the indifferent to display the same “audacity and resolve” of those would destroy our country from within.
“These are the times that try men’s souls.” Those words were written by Thomas Paine, American patriot, from “The Crisis. The quote goes on to say that, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
General Flynn carried that forward, saying that “the trials of our current times, like warfare, are immense and consequences severer and these seem unconquerable.”
Flynn goes on to tell the story of a female police officer from Virginia, who told him, “People don’t feel safe in their homes and our police force is so demoralized we cannot function as we should. In my 23 years with my department, I have never seen morale so low.”
Yet another woman from Mississippi, clearly frustrated by the lack of leadership coming from political leaders, told Flynn that leaders need to “drop a forceful hammer. People are losing patience. It simply must be stopped! Laws MUST be enforced…no one is above the law.”
On the outside looking in, it appears that these forces are strong, Flynn says while surmising that in fact, they are desperate. Only a slight pushback, he reasons would be enough to defeat these people, and that push needs to start with law enforcement. Police are truly the last line of defense against criminals and anarchists. We are a nation of laws. If the laws are not being enforced, we are nothing but a banana republic. Is this what Democrats want? Who knows?
As Flynn says, law enforcement needs the silent majority to speak up for them and support them. There are many, many people out there who stand with our law enforcement officers, but in many cases they are afraid to speak out.
Risk of violence, fear of losing employment and complacency are among the reasons that the majority is remaining silent. It seems like it is, however, only a matter of time before the complacent tire of seeing our country destroyed from the inside and finally say enough.
Unfortunately, many of our leaders, who the indifferent look up to, are complicit in the virtual insurrection ongoing in our country. Where people would normally be looking at these people for leadership, all we see is feckless “leaders” such as Republican senators who are throwing down with the mob, with one looking to remove qualified immunity from police, to two others who think it is important to remove Columbus Day as a national holiday and replace it with Juneteenth, a day which nobody heard of until this past June. Even Obama as president for eight years never mentioned the day.
Flynn believes, as do w that the current attacks being perpetrated against the country are not something that randomly popped up as a result of George Floyd’s death, but rather are part of a “well-orchestrated and well-funded effort that uses racism as its sword to aggravate our battlefield dispositions.” When you say well-funded, you probably need look no further than George Soros, who seems to have his hands into everything anti-American which is going on now and in the past number of years.
That weapon, the current attacks, are only used to “leverage and legitimize violence and crime, not to seek or serve the truth.”
The goal? “To promote radical social change through power and control.” They are trying to undo our capitalist system in favor of their socialist utopia as an ultimate end.
As part of that goal, they are also attempting to make the country a secular nation. Don’t think for a minute that the draconian orders issued by primarily Democrat governors in response to the pandemic which banned in-person church services were not a trial run. Push, push…nudge, nudge. This is how progressives work.
Look at how easily people bought into the whole mask thing. There are virtual “mask police” stalking stores and businesses, making sure that everyone has their mask on and “mask shaming” those who don’t. Businesses have implemented mandatory mask policies, even for those who do not have issues with social distancing or having customer contact. Those who do not comply risk their employment.
The same happened for keeping businesses closed. Governors picked the winners and losers, such as it was ok to open a marijuana dispensary, but you couldn’t get a haircut. You could go to Target, but you couldn’t’ go to Kohls. And most people just went along. Those who protested government overreach were condemned as putting lives at risk for large gatherings, while people who were rioting were given no such condemnation.
Progressives want to remove God from everything. Removing people from churches was a first step, but the ultimate goal is to remove God from everything.
We have seen first-hand over the past three-plus years that when President Trump was speaking about the “swamp,” he was on to something. The swamp however isn’t just Democrats. There are plenty of Republicans that populate the swamp, and of course there are the “never-Trumpers,” such as Mitt Romney and others in the Republican establishment. Many of these swamp rats have been in power for much too long.
The American experiment if you will has lasted for nearly 250 years. As General Flynn says, we need to remember how we got here. Americans by and large have a thirst and a hunger for freedom, and we need to hold on dearly to our God-given rights. We need to stand up, speak out, and demand of our leaders that they remember they work for us. As Flynn says, “we put them in charge; we can remove them as well.”
We will close with what General Flynn finished with:
“We must not allow a small percentage of the powerful to overtake our position on America’s battlefield. We, as free-thinking and acting individuals, must control how we will live and not allow a few passionate others to change our way of life.
To the silent and currently indifferent majority: Wake up. America is at risk of being lost in the dustbin of history to socialism The very heart and soul of America is at stake.
In war, as in life, most failure comes from inaction. We face a pivotal moment that can change the course of history of our nation.
We the people must challenge every politician at every level.
We also must stand and support our law enforcement professionals: They are the pointy end of the spear defending us against anarchy.
Now is the time to act.”
Thank you General Flynn. Those of us who have dedicated our lifeblood to law enforcement are blessed to have someone of your stature on our side.
God Bless you sir!
