K-9 Bites Deputy
A Manatee County, Florida sheriff’s deputy was bitten by his own K-9 partner. A deputy was involved in a high-speed car chase at speeds over one hundred miles per hour. Ricardo Guzman was fleeing from police until “stop sticks” halted his car. A second deputy responded as back up with his K-9 partner, Frankie. Frankie was assisting as Guzman exited the car, but then bit his own partner. His partner received two puncture wounds which were treated at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center on an outpatient basis. The deputy was quickly able to bring the dog under control, despite a bite to his upper thigh.
Neither deputy has been identified publicly. Guzman, age 21, was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding police, vehicle theft, and driving without a valid license. Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Dave Bristow advised that the incident was under review. “When working with animals, you can’t always predict what will happen.”
