Is Black Lives Matter funding an anti-Trump campaign with tax-exempt money? (op-ed)

This editorial is brought to you by a retired police officer and current staff writer for Law Enforcement Today.

In all honesty, we have not watched one minute of the Democratic National Convention this week. Because we know exactly what is going to be said, who will be put up as the “good guys” and who will be excoriated as the “bad guys.”

Aside from the usual bagful of goodies such as “free” healthcare, “free” education, “free” housing, the “right” to a universal basic income, and all of those socialist wish list items, preaching to the American people about “systemic” racism and trumpeting the talking points of Black Lives Matter was surely on the menu.

Law Enforcement Today represents the more than 800,000 police officers in the United States of America.

As such, we tend to be unabashedly pro-America, pro-Constitution, pro-Liberty, and anti-Marxist. While we do not claim to represent every police officer in the country, we believe we represent an overwhelming percentage of them.

November 3, 2020 will represent a turning point in our country. Clearly outside forces have interfered in our election, not Russians or bots or the extra-terrestrials who are apparently stealing mailboxes from city streets under our very eyes.

COVID-19, an unexpected enemy that found its way into the country via China is one factor that has turned the election from what should have been a sure Republican win into a tossup.

An economy that was on-fire, with record low unemployment across the board, including in the Hispanic and African American communities, with low gas prices, the stock markets in record territory and an overwhelming majority of Americans being employed was eviscerated in mere weeks.

The other factor of course is the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. We can debate all day long about whether or not Floyd was a “dead man walking” before his interaction with the Minneapolis police, or whether his death was in fact exacerbated by Derek Chauvin.

The fact of the matter is his death lit the match that put us where we are at today…criminals are embraced, police are scum.

That brings us to the group Black Lives Matter. We have been quite clear that we believe there is a huge difference from the belief that black lives matter, just as all lives do, and the organization by the same name.

Unfortunately, not everyone can draw the difference, from NFL, NBA and MLB players, companies such as Goodyear, Walmart, and others, to your average American on the street. It is important that everyone understands exactly who Black Lives Matter is and what they want.

The quickest way to get into an argument these days is to try to make the case that all lives matter.

That is taken as meaning that if you feel that way, you are a racist. Which leads to the question. If “all lives” comprises whites, blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, and so on, how is that “racist?”

If you cannot admit that because of the color of your skin, the fact that you were born white that somehow you had some type of inherent privilege, you are a racist. In fact, if you refuse to simply admit you are a racist, therefore your are one. Does this make any sense whatsoever?

There was a time in the not so distant past in this country when you could disagree with someone. You respected their opinion, and they respected yours. That is no longer the case.

If you wear a MAGA hat, you are automatically considered to be a racist who wants all black people to die. If you fly a thin blue line in front of your home, you are putting your house at risk of getting a broken window, if you’re lucky.

If you’re unlucky, you could literally have someone fire bullets into your house, or as happened in one case, have your house set on fire.

So, who exactly is Black Lives Matter? As a member of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, BLM has gotten tremendous traction since Floyd’s death. They have been raking in enormous amounts of cash and have been elevated to rock star status.

Major league sports leagues adorned their basketball courts with the name, Major League Baseball adorned its pitchers mounds with the name on opening weekend, while you can’t turn on the television without being preached to about “systemic racism” and criminal justice reform. The organization has taken on a life of its own.

Criticize BLM? You could lose your career. Put up the wrong post on social media? You could get your account suspended if you’re lucky, deleted if you’re not. Refuse to buy into the BLM narrative? You could get your business destroyed by online bullies who post bogus reviews on platforms such as Google, Yelp or Facebook.

What of the hundreds of blacks who have died after George Floyd, in cities from New York to Chicago to Seattle, some as young as one-year-old? If you bring that fact up, the fact that if black lives matter ALL black lives should matter, you are, believe it or not a racist.

If BLM were a legitimate organization, seeking legitimate social change, why wouldn’t they be crying out for the innocent lives that have been lost since the end of May, all in the name of justice?

They’re not legitimate and that is the problem. They are being celebrated by Democrats who smell blood in the water and believe it is politically expedient to show that they are “down with the revolution.”

We will not attempt to convince you that BLM is not what it appears to be, although it is pretty easy to do so. Instead, we will present some information to let you make an informed decision as to what you believe BLM is and in which direction they want to take our country.

Are they acting in good faith or are they trying to do what former president Barack Obama was not able to do, or where he was successful, President Trump undid it…and that is to fundamentally transform the United States of America.

Just remember this—they are able to use tax-exempt resources to undermine the candidacy of President Trump, and so BLM is arguably skirting the law where political advocacy is concerned.

According to our sources, the BLM Global Network is able to gain its tax-exempt status from ActBlue Charities, Thousand Currents and the Tides Foundation, a George Soros funded organization.

The donation page for BLM Global Network is funneled through ActBlue Charities, which when you click on the link takes you to a page which says, “Urgent: Fund the Movement,” which then lets you select an amount. The page also says:

“We appreciate your support of the movement and our ongoing fight to end state-sanctioned violence, liberate Black people, and end white supremacy forever.”

The page then notes:

“Your contribution will benefit Black Lives Matter Support Fund at Tides Foundation.”

Previously, the link took you to a page that said:

“Your contribution will benefit Black Lives Matter Global Network.”

The page, since archived shows that moneys are collected through ActBlue Charities, which also by the way funneled donations for the Democratic National Committee.

ActBlue Charities is a tax-exempt nonprofit, and as such is not legally able to donate to election campaigns, however ActBlue is not tax-exempt and therefore not under any such restrictions.

Thousand Currents, which was BLM’s fiscal sponsor through June 2020 has some issues of its own.

One of the members of its board of directors, Susan Rosenberg, helped a convicted cop-killer, Assata Shakur, escape from prison. Shakur was given asylum in Cuba. It is interesting that BLM cut ties with Thousand Currents once Rosenberg was outed as a “problem.”

Law Enforcement Today previously reported on Thousand Currents in June.

Finally, the Tides Foundation took over fundraising for BLM in July. People often suspected that George Soros had his grubby paws all over what has been going on since the Floyd death, and this confirms it.

Soros is a billionaire who likes to drop his copious amounts of cash sticking his nose into American public policy, and he has funded the campaigns of numerous district attorneys and attorney generals across the country who are implementing a far-left, anti-police ideology.

Those attorney generals include Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is prosecuting the four Minneapolis officers in conjunction with Floyd’s death.

According to the Internal Revenue Service:

“All 501(c)(3) organizations are prohibited from participating in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate running for public office. The prohibition applies to all campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels.”

Once again, it is up to voters across the country to make up their minds about whether BLM is skirting the law through its fundraising efforts. According to The Federalist, citing Cleta Mitchell, a campaign finance regulation authority notes that BLM “must comply with all the rules that govern 501(c)(3) organizations.”

It seems like they are skirting that requirement, at least from a cursory look.

Our sources indicate that it is important to recognize the difference between the Black Lives Matter Foundation, which is a tax-exempt nonprofit, and BLM Global Network, which is a different organization.

We looked at BLM’s own website, and that is where the citations below are from. The fourth citation is from CNN. It is clear from the information cited in those links that BLM Global Network is actively campaigning against President Trump. This information is not hearsay or hyperbole. It is drawn directly from BLM Global Network.

  1. When former Trump attorney Michael Cohen testified before a congressional committee, BLM noted that the testimony was “intended to expose a pattern of lies and criminal activity by the President of the United States.” BLM claimed that there were “racially charged antics and accusations,” which “were repulsive, hurtful and denigrating to Black people.”

“As disheartening as this was, we are reminded that the 2020 election is around the corner. We can make our voices heard by voting this Administration out of office.” They went on to say, “…we will hold candidates accountable and demand they center an agenda that protects and empowers our communities. We will demand that candidates address the increasing acts of racism, division and white supremacy that impact us every day.”

  1. Response to President Trump’s State of the Union, BLM said, “Like a Nazi trying to hide a neck tattoo, Trump shows his true colors whenever he shifts aimlessly from empty platitude to veiled threat.”
  2. “#WhatMatters2020 is a campaign aimed to maximize the impact of the BLM movement by galvanizing BLM supporters and allies to the polls in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election to build collective power and ensure candidates are held accountable for the issues that systematically and disproportionately impact Black and under-served communities across the nation.”

Within the above page, is a link to something called “The Electoral Justice Project.” Clearly a political initiative, this looks to “…build Black political power. Are you an organizer committed to using every tool at your disposal for Black liberation?”

  1. On CNN, Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors said, “…we are going to push for is a move to get Trump out…Our goal is to get Trump out.” Sounds pretty political to us.

5. On Twitter, Cullors says (last ten seconds), “We get Trump out of office by leading with bold and creative action.”

Cullors by the way, along with one of the other co-founders is a committed Marxist and even bragged about that fact.

Clearly, the BLM Global Network, disguising itself as a tax-exempt nonprofit is engaging in political hijinks, which is a violation of IRS regulations.

Finally, the BLM Global Network is clearly aligned with the Democratic National Committee. According to the Washington Post, “In contrast [to 1968],  the 2020 convention aligned itself Monday with the Black Lives Matter movement without dissent.”

Clearly, the close relationship between the DNC and BLM is questionable at best, along with what the BLM Global Network is doing with the pile of cash it has been raising.

This is an issue which in most years would be looked into by the Department of Justice, however in such a polarizing political climate, it’s not known if the DOJ would go near it. Any such move would be viewed as election year electioneering and of course would be put on the lap of President Trump.

Unfortunately, we have a complicit media complex in bed with both the Democrats and BLM, with limited exceptions. The issue is that very few mainstream outlets, with the possible exception of Fox News, OANN and Newsmax will go near this. One can imagine if it were President Trump and a right-leaning organization pulling this malarkey (sorry, shameless Joe Biden reference), it would be all over the news 24/7.

Ultimately, it will be up to the American people to do their due diligence and investigate BLM and where exactly the money is going. If it is going into the coffers of the DNC ultimately, that will be a scandal of epic proportions and will out BLM as the biggest fraud ever perpetrated upon the American people.
