Illinois State Police Director Hiram Grau announced this afternoon that 32 year old Trooper Kyle Deatherage was hit by a semi truck tractor combination vehicle and killed in a traffic crash about 9:00 Monday morning.  Deatherage was a motor officer in District 18 of the Illinois State Police and had made a traffic stop on a vehicle on I-55 near the Raymond exit (Exit # 62).

Trooper Deatherage had parked his police motorcycle behind the suspected violator’s vehicle, (emergency lights flashing) and was standing on the shoulder of the roadway talking with the violator at the time he was struck.  Interstate 55 was closed between exit # 60 and # 63 while the crash reconstruction team investigated the crash.

There has been no mention of any possible charges being filed against the driver of the semi truck tractor combination vehicle as the crash investigation is still continuing.

Kyle Deatherage was a Trooper with the Ilinois State Police since May 31, 2009. Prior to serving as a Trooper, Deatherage served five years as a Madison County Sheriff Deputy.   He is survived by his wife, Sarah, a 4year old daughter and a 10 month old son.
