Colonel Paul Pride, Superintendent of the Ohio Highway State Patrol, sadly reports the death of Trooper Kenneth Velez.
Trooper Velez, 48, was working a traffic enforcement on the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 when he made a traffic stop on a vehicle. Both vehicles were stopped on a wide area of the median shoulder. When Trooper Velez exited his patrol vehicle he was struck by black Hyundai hatchback sedan.

Trooper Velez sustained critical injuries in the crash. Trooper Velez was transported to Metro Health Hospital in Cleveland where he died a short time later. The driver of the Hyundai remained at the scene and was later given a field sobriety tests and taken into custody by investigating Troopers. It is not known what charges may be filed as the crash investigation is not complete at this time.

Trooper Velez is a graduate of the 118th Trooper Recruit Class and was assigned to the Cleveland Post. He had previously served at the Elyria and Medina Posts’. Trooper Velez is a twenty seven year veteran of the Patrol. He is survived by three children.
