Sheriff Mark Hecker of the Butler County Nebraska Sheriff Department has passed away as a result of a heart attack.

Sheriff Hecker, 53, fell ill during a struggle with a mentally-ill individual who he was attempting to take into emergency protective custody on August 8.   Following the arrest, Sheriff Hecker drove himself to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  He was immediately admitted into the cardiac care unit.

While in the hospital, Sheriff Hecker’s condition continued to gradually worsen.  He  suffered a subsequent massive heart attack and died 4 days later.

Sheriff Hecker served the law enforcement community for 37 years and Butler County as Sheriff for 26 years.  Sheriff Hecker had previously served the Humphrey and David City Police Departments for 9 years prior to serving Butler County.

Sheriff Hecker is survived by two brothers; 6 children and 5 grandchildren.
