Sergeant Melendez-Maldonado, 51, was shot and killed while he was conducting a narcotics trafficking investigation. Agents arrived at the scene of an apartment complex where a search warrant raid was to be conducted. A suspected “lookout” opened fire with a high powered rifle, killing Sergeant Melendez-Maldonado instantly. As the shot rang out, two other subjects emerged from a nearby minivan and opened fire on the remaining officers.
All three of the three suspects were wounded by agents that returned fire. It was later determined that the three suspects were at the complex to murder their rival gang members.
