Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum of the Ulster County Sheriff Department in New York sadly reports the death of Sergeant Kerry Winters.

Sergeant Winters, 51, was participating in an In Service Training Dive with the Department’s In-Water Rescue Dive Team at the Ashokan Reservoir.
During the training dive, Sergeant Winters became separated from his two dive partners. Sergeant Winters was located by other divers and brought to the surface. Officers performed CPR on Sergeant Winters and also utilized an Automated Electronic Defibrillator.
Sergeant Winters was transported to the Broadway Campus of the Hudson Valley Health Alliance Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the cause of Sergeant Winters’ death is in the preliminary stages and is expected to include an autopsy along with a complete inspection of his diving gear, air quality and any possible entanglements he may have encountered under water.
Sergeant Winters served the Ulster County Sheriff Department for thirty one years in the Corrections Division. He was a member of the Dive Team for several years. Sergeant Winters is survived by his wife and two children.
