Chief Gregory J. Benton of the Dothan Police Department in Alabama sadly reports the death of Sergeant Jeffrey W. Garrett.

Sergeant Garrett, 47, was with other officers and was participating in a department-sponsored training run at the Westgate Recreational Park early in the morning.

Following the run, the officers were walking and talking with each other when he experience pain in his chest and side. Sgt. Garrett then suddenly collapsed.

The officers immediately commenced CPR and summoned advanced medical aid. Paramedics arrived and provided advanced life support treatment in addition to transporting Sgt. Garrett to Flowers Hospital. Emergency room doctors were unable to revive Sgt. Garrett and he passed away a short time after his arrival at the hospital.

Sgt. Garrett was a 22-year veteran of the Dothan Police Department, serving in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Section and Narcotics Unit. He was recently assigned to the Field Officer Training Section as its Supervisor. Sgt. Garrett is survived by his wife, three children and two stepchildren.
